Energy Harvesting Opportunities in Vehicles
The automotive industry is at a time of total change with every component and subsystem subject to radical and rapid change. Consider urban buses. Only a five years ago, almost all of these were powered by very old internal combustion engine technology. Then came the hybrids, with 600 being introduced in London at the present. These used nickel metal hydride batteries then some used lithium-ion batteries to provide a plug-in option. However, thes...
Multi-passenger electric aircraft takes flight
A fully electric Cessna 172 has successfully flown multiple times powered by Panacis' advanced lithium batteries. The aircraft, designed by Colorado-based Beyond Aviation has been undergoing ground testing and short hop flights for almost a year with increasing range and altitude testing culminating in the recent completion of the entire test plan.
Three ways that traction motor makers race to escape rare earths
In 2022, over 128 million electric vehicles will be made, mainly two wheelers, according to the IDTechEx report, Electric Vehicles 2012-2022. That means over $260 billion dollars of business in our estimations, even at ex-factory prices, with cars being under 50% of that figure.
Hybrid bus drive systems in China move Maxwell forward
Supercapacitor leader Maxwell Technologies recorded total revenue of $39.2 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2012. - a up 11% from the same period a year ago. Growth was driven not only by ultracapacitor sales of $22 million, which is up 3% from Q1 '11, but also by unusually strong sales of microelectronics and high-voltage capacitor products, which came in at $17.2 million - up 24% from last year's first quarter.
Sodium-ion vehicle battery cheaper than Li-ion
Sumitomo Chemical Company is filing patents this year on its advances in sodium ion rechargeable batteries that could find their way into vehicles. The present invention, even when using a carbonaceous material as a negative electrode active material, can prevent the reduction in over-discharging cycle length of the battery, and is useful particularly as a secondary battery.
Toyota Motorsport brings electric technology to Pikes Peak
Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) will demonstrate its high-performance electric powertrain technology on one of North America's most demanding motorsport events; the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado on 8 July.
Fuel cell vehicle with 500 mile range
MECc (Modular Energy Carrier concept) has developed a clean, simple and competitive range extender for battery electric vehicles based on bio-methanol fuel cells as energy carrier. ECOmove plan to use the technology in their upcoming electric vehicle QBEAK.
Keeping electric vehicle batteries cool
Heat can damage the batteries of electric vehicles - even just driving fast on the freeway in summer temperatures can overheat the battery. An innovative new coolant conducts heat away from the battery three times more effectively than water, keeping the battery temperature within an acceptable range even in extreme driving situations.
First test run of the MAHLE Range Extender
For vehicles with battery-electric drive, the use of a range extender appears to be a suitable solution to ensure a range approaching that of a conventional vehicle. The Stuttgart specialist MAHLE Powertrain has developed their own range extender, with flexible mounting position, in just 10 months without the support of an OEM.
DoE Awards Up To $120 Million For Battery Hub To Argonne-led Group
A multi-partner team led by Argonne National Laboratory has been selected for an award of up to $120 million over five years to establish a new Batteries and Energy Storage Hub. The Hub, to be known as the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), will combine the R&D firepower of five DOE national laboratories, five universities, and four private firms in an effort aimed at achieving revolutionary advances in battery performance. Advanci...
