Power GaN: Who is part of the playground?
Eight years have passed since the first commercialised power GaN device. People in the power electronics industry are becoming increasingly familiar with the names of startups that are actively promoting GaN technology. Efficient Power Conversion (EPC), GaN Systems, Transphorm or Navitas, in addition to the power electronics leaders, are also highly involved in the development of GaN technology.
Super-junction MOSFETs offer high efficiency
MDmesh M6 series super-junction transistors from STMicroelectronics (ST) are in stock at Mouser Electronics. Designed for high efficiency in medium-power resonant and hard-switching converter topologies, the MOSFETs enable increased power density in equipment such as battery chargers, power adapters, PC power supplies, LED drivers, telecom and server power supplies, and solar micro-inverters.
Records broken at embedded world 2019
In its 17th year, embedded world impressed the global embedded community and reportedly excelled across the board. The results for visitor and exhibitor numbers and display area were outstanding: around 31,000 trade visitors, the second best visitor total since the trade fair began, and 1,117 companies from all over the world flocked to the eight percent larger display area at Exhibition Centre Nuremberg.
How to enable 45W high efficiency Type-C USB PD 3.0 adapters
The STEVAL-USBPD45C 45W AC-DC adapter reference design features a USB Type-C connector and functions as a USB Power Delivery provider with a single source port.

Super-junction MOSFETs target energy-saving power topologies
Targeting energy-saving power topologies, STMicroelectronics’ MDmesh M6 series 600V super-junction transistors are engineered for high efficiency in medium-power resonant and hard-switching converter topologies. The threshold voltage optimised for soft switching makes the the new transistors suited for LLC resonant converters and boost-PFC converters in energy-conscious applications.
Amazon FreeRTOS support with Bluetooth extended
STMicroelectronicsannounced at AWS re:Invent 2018 extended support for Amazon FreeRTOS with new starter kits for the STM32, a family of 32-bit Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers.
Agreement to boost expansion of SiC in automotive applications
It has been announced that Cree has signed a multi-year agreement to produce and supply its Wolfspeed silicon carbide (SiC) wafers to STMicroelectronics. The agreement governs the supply of a quarter billion dollars of Cree’s advanced 150mm silicon carbide bare and epitaxial wafers to STMicroelectronics during this period of extraordinary growth and demand for silicon carbide power devices.
Embedded PCM for automotive MCUs begin sampling
STMicroelectronicshas presented at IEDM2018 architecture and performance benchmarks of a technology based on 28nm FD-SOI with embedded Phase-Change Memory (ePCM) designed for its automotive microcontrollers (MCUs). ST's products based on ePCM are sampling now to alpha customers, with field trials meeting the requirements of automotive applications and full technology qualification expected in 2020.
Energy-saving low-noise LDO regulator powers automotive modules
For always-on automotive modules and noise-sensitive loads, STMicroelectronics has released the LDO40L 400mA low-dropout linear regulator, which delivers quiet and efficient power. With 45µA quiescent current, the AEC-Q100 qualified LDO40L reduces the demand on vehicle batteries to run loads such as body and interior functions that are active when the ignition is off.
