Micro-camera can be injected with a syringe
German engineers have created a camera no bigger than a grain of salt that could change the future of health imaging—and clandestine surveillance.Using 3D printing, researchers from the University of Stuttgart built a three-lens camera, and fit it onto the end of an optical fibre the width of two hairs.Such technology could be used as minimally-intrusive endoscopes for exploring inside the human body, the engineers reported in the journalNa...
Tiny lasers enable faster next-gen microprocessors
A group of scientists from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; the University of California, Santa Barbara; Sandia National Laboratories and Harvard University were able to fabricate tiny lasers directly on silicon—a huge breakthrough for the semiconductor industry and well beyond. For more than 30 years, the crystal lattice of silicon and of typical laser materials could not match up, making it impossible to integrate the two m...
Ultrasensitive nonlinear metamaterials used for data transfer
Scientists have demonstrated the effect of all-optical switching between streams of photons, born during the third harmonic generation process, using non-linear metamaterials. Researchers at Lomonosov Moscow State University planned the study and conducted calculations and experiments, while their German colleagues made samples of metamaterials. The results are published in Scientific Reports.
IoT event to host fifth edition in Eindhoven
The High Tech Campus Eindhoven in The Netherlands is set to host the fifth edition of the Internet of Things Event. A two-day event that will give insights into essential topics like security, business models, machine learning/artificial intelligence, cyber security, big data applications and IoT legal and tax issues. It will include a conference, workshops and an exhibition.
High-output UV LED light source
Hamamatsu Photonics has developed a new high-output UV LED light source that offers around 7 times the intensity of previous models, for use in applications such as bonding, printing, labelling and more.
Artemis Optical wins contract to supply HUD assemblies
Artemis Optical Limited has entered into an agreement with a major international aviation company to supply advanced Head-Up Display (HUD) assemblies. The HUDsenable pilots of aircraft ranging from jet trainers to large commercial airliners to absorb data without having to look away from their usual viewpoints. Cockpit crew see flight-critical information in front of them, in real-time, so they don’t have to look down at control systems.
Photodiode sensor suits measuring power of laser bar code scanners
Ophir Photonics Group has announced theBC20-V1laser sensor for measuring the power of scanned or intermittent beams. The BC20-V1 is a photodiode sensor that measures any wavelength over the spectral range of 400 – 1100nm. It is the only product on the market that is capable of measuring the power of laser bar code scanners; it also measures laser printer scanners and the peak power of pulsed mode lasers.
Laser-based light breaks record for data communication
Cell phones and Wi-Fi devices typically transmit data using radio waves, but as the demand for wireless data transfer increases, congestion in the radio spectrum is expected to become more of a problem. One way to solve this problem is with VLC, a technology that uses visible light rather than radio waves for data transmission. VLC uses lasers or LEDs that look just like traditional lights, but by rapidly switching on and off faster than the eye ...
LEDs playing a key role in industrial applications
A new USB interface controlled LED illumination system has been introduced by IMM Photonics for curing of UV adhesives reproducibly with high intensity at a wavelength from 365nm to 440nm.
