Seeing the light
Steve Rogerson discusses whether LIDAR can continue its journey to become a sensor technology of choice for autonomous vehicles.LIDAR is not new. The light equivalent to RADAR uses pulsed laser beams and measures their reflections to determine the distance of objects, and it has been around since the 1960s. It was originally used for gathering information about clouds and shot to fame in 1971 when the Apollo 15 mission used it to map the surface ...
Optoelectronics works without glass
Researchers at ETHZurich have developed the first opto-electronic circuit component that works without glass and is instead made of metal. The component, referred to as a modulator, converts electrical data signals into optical signals. It is smaller and faster than current modulators, and much easier and cheaper to make.Optical components for microelectronics must be made of glass.
The importance of the UX in automotive innovation
Held at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany, the international VDI Congress ELIV (Electronics In Vehicles) defines new trends and establishes the main basis for decision making in the automotive industry. ELIV is the most significant networking event for professionals in automotive electronics. Daisy Stapley-Bunten reports.

Quality of pulsed laser diodes meets highest demands
LASER COMPONENTS has announced that the first of its products has achieved qualification for use in the automotive industry. Pulsed Laser Diodes (PLD) with a wavelength of 905nm are key components for the LiDAR technology (Light Detection and Ranging) used in autonomous driving. In the interests of safety and technological excellence, the automotive industry demands the highest quality standards from their suppliers – including those deliver...
Driverless vehicle on display in Madison
Like many of today’s fully loaded cars, which offer capabilities such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic parking, the Navya passenger shuttle capitalises on such cutting-edge technologies as Lidar, GPS, cameras, dynamic driving algorithms, and more in the features that enable its passengers to arrive safely at their destinations. One feature that’s noticeably missing, however, is a steering wheel. And space for...
GM throwing shade at Tesla's self-driving capabilities
The act of publicly insulting a rival can be an art form unto itself. For example,Dorothy Parker once wrote of Audrey Hepburn's acting: 'Miss Hepburn ran the whole gamut of emotions - from A to B'. Then there's football coach Steve Spurrier, who once said of a rival coach, 'I saw a story saying Jim Haslett comes in at 4:30 every morning. That's not doing him much good'. Andorra becomes a 'living lab' for urban innovation research
Researchers have developed CityScope Andorra, a 3Daugmented-reality platform that visualises complex urban data on a small-scale model of the country in real-time. The platform simulates the impact of multiple urban interventions — from urban planning proposals to shared autonomous vehicles — and facilitates civic engagement and decision making.
16-bit digitisers offer speed and channel options
A smooth technology upgrade path is always welcomed by engineers and it is a practice which is a founding principle of Spectrum Instrumentation. It is at the heart of a new digitiser platform launched by the company. The M2p will be the PCIe base for all upcoming products for the next years, while the new 59xx module will be available in many variations. The M2p platform and 59xx module form 13 different new digitiser cards with lots of options r...
