Open data challenge finalists reveal solutions to end world hunger
One of the greatest challenges of our generation is achieving universal food and nutrition security. Whilst this appears to be an achievable goal owing to the knowledge we have today about how to grow more food and eat more nutritious meals, ironically a preponderance of the nearly 800 million most hungry and malnourished people on earth are themselves farmers.
New digestion plant to be built for egg producer
An anaerobic digestion plant for Colombia‘s largest egg producer, will shortly commence building by WELTEC BIOPOWER.Planned to go live in early 2017, the 800kW biogas, in terms of the feedstock input, the operator Incubadora Santander, which produces about 3.5 million eggs a day, plans to make use of the co-digestion of dry chicken manure from the laying hens and process water from the production.
Cyber-space to cyber-seas
As smart farming marches into the technological future, there are some weird and wonderful solutions appearing to accommodate population growth. Electronic Specifier’s Daisy Stapley-Bunten investigates.
IoT modules combine Bluetooth v4.0 and LoRa support
What are claimed to be the first IoT (Internet of Things) modules to combine Bluetooth v4.0 and LoRa support in a single device, the Laird RM1 series are available at Alpha Micro Components. Enabling low energy connectivity over distances of many miles, these modules save money and time while enhancing safety and slashing downtime.
ams acquires colour & spectral sensing specialist MAZeT
ams has closed the transaction to acquire 100% of the shares in the colour and spectral sensing systems specialist MAZeT GmbH for an undisclosed amount in cash. The strategic acquisition extends ams’ market leadership in advanced optical sensors and strengthens ams’ position in emerging optical sensing applications.
Boosting food production with more crop per drop
Boosting food production with limited water availability is of great importance to humanity. However, our current water usage is already unsustainable today. The fact that plant leaves lose a great deal of water through photosynthesis is the greatest limiting factor for larger harvests worldwide. Scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed an approach to solving the problem: they have been able to get plants to use water...
Nordic unveils product roadmap low power cellular IoT
Nordic Semiconductor announces the development of a low power LTE technology for cellular IoT. Designed specifically to address the needs of the emerging low power cellular IoT market, the upcoming Nordic Semiconductor nRF91 series includes highly integrated chipsets and software for the forthcoming 3GPP Release 13 LTE-M and NB-IoT cellular technologies.
Large drone research project starts in Oklahoma
Nearly 100 researchers and students from four universities, including the University of Kentucky, converged in Stillwater, Oklahoma, recently to do what they do best—fly UAS, otherwise known as drone systems. The groups from UK, Oklahoma State University (OSU), the University of Oklahoma (OU) and University of Nebraska-Lincoln were conducting their first flight campaign for CLOUD MAP, the $6 million NSF-funded project focused on using drone...
What really matters to connected industry?
Mats Andersson, Senior Director Technology, Product Center Short Range Radio, and Simon Glassman, Head of Strategic Partnerships EMEA at u-blox, discuss how data is transforming industrial processes and look at the things that really matter to today’s connected industry.
Narrowband IoT module provides over 10 years’ battery life
u-blox has announced that its SARA-N2 Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) module is the world’s first cellular radio module compliant to the 3GPP Release 13, Narrowband IoT (LTE Cat. NB1) standard. Designed for use in applications such as smart buildings and cities, utilities metering, white goods, asset tracking and agricultural and environmental monitoring, the module will operate for between 10 and 20 years from a single-cell primary battery.
