FluxGage: an all-in-One LED Luminaire measurement system
Ophir Photonics Group, a Newport company, has announced the FluxGage, a compact, all-in-one LED luminaire measurement system. The patent-pending FluxGage measures flux, color, and flicker, important quantities for evaluating the performance of LED-based products. The measurement system is three times smaller and lower cost than equivalent integrating sphere products.
Paving the way towards exascale optical networks
In the face of increasing bandwidth demands, groundbreaking research between the University of Bristol and the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT) in Japan, has demonstrated solutions for network infrastructure to address the looming network capacity crunch.
With great power comes great laser science
Researchers at the photonics institute at TU Wien have built a device which emits ultrashort flashes of infrared light with extremely high energy. "It is very hard to combine these three properties - long infrared wavelength, short duration and high energy", says Valentina Shumakova. "But this combination is exactly what we need for many interesting strong-field applications."
InGaAs photodiode designed for near infrared spectrophotometry
The InGaAs linear image sensor consisting of 512 pixels with a 25µm pixel pitch has been introduced by Hamamatsu Photonics. The G12230-512WB employs two InGaAs chips of different cut-off wavelengths, giving it a spectral response range of 950 to 2150nm.
USB-powered polychromator contains optical elements
The TF series mini-spectrometer for colour measurement applications; the C13555MA has been introduced by Hamamatsu Photonics. This USB-powered polychromator contains optical elements, a driver circuit and a built-in high-sensitivity CMOS sensor. The512 pixel CMOS sensor allows for low power consumption while retaining the sensitivity of a CCD; the trigger function within the device can be used for spectroscopic measurement of pulse emissions.
MPPCs incorporate through-hole electrodes
The range of Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPC); the S13360-VE series has been introduced byHamamatsu Photonics. These COB package type MPPCs incorporate through-hole electrodes called TSV (Through-Silicon Via). This process optimises the available space between the sensitive area and the package edge (0.2mm on the four sides), allowing for a four-sided buttable arrangement.
Camera that sees invisible danger to make land, sea and air safer
A group of European scientists are developing a surveillance camera harnessing new photonics technology that will dramatically reduce coastal rescue times in low visibility conditions, target Greenhouse gasses and keep us safer on the Underground. The camera, measuring the size of a shoebox, uses Multi Spectral Imaging, a process that captures the same image at different frequencies from the electromagnetic spectrum.
Fast parallel and nanoscale-accurate solution required in SiP test
Based on a specialised digital motion controller, the FMPA Fast Multichannel Photonics Alignment Engine is an advanced alignment system, with embedded advanced alignment and tracking functionality and a hybrid precision scanning and tracking mechanism combining the advantages of piezoelectric on servo-motorised drives.
Startup makes residential solar panels twice as efficient
With a 36% yield, the solar panels developed by startup Insolight could deliver up to twice as much energy as traditional panels. The company came up with a thin structure that directs the sun’s rays to the small surface area of very high performance solar cells. The result is a highly efficient flat photovoltaic system.
Sensor could help fight deadly bacterial infections
Scientists have built a sensor that can detect the potentially deadly E.coli bacteria in 15-20 minutes, much faster than traditional lab tests. E.coli can be transmitted in contaminated food and water, posing particular risks to children and the elderly. In the late spring of 2011 a serious outbreak of E.coli bacteria sickened thousands of people in Germany and killed more than 50.
