Automotive-grade backlight LED driver optimised for LCD panels
ROHM has announced the availability of the latest LED driver IC, the BD81A76EFV-M, optimised for LCD backlight in instrument cluster, centre information displays and car navigation. Unlike conventional drivers with four channels that support LCDs up to eight inches, this IC provides six channels of output (with 120mA per channel) that can support LCD panels of up to ten to 12” class.
Cost savings by upgrading streetlights to LEDs
Belo Horizonte, one of Brazil’s largest cities, is realising 50% electricity cost savings by upgrading 182,000 streetlights with new LEDs from Signify. The upgrade is part of Brazil's first major public lighting public-private partnership between Belo Horizonte Iluminaçao Publica (BHIP) and Signify. The new LED lights also improve the safety of the citizens on the streets of Belo Horizonte.
Spotlight shines on Japan as the Rugby World Cup nears kick-off
Signify is playing a key role in the build up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup, after installing LED lighting in Kobe Misaki stadium, Japan, one of the stadiums being used for the tournament which takes place from 20th September 20 to 2nd November.
Rough and tough sensors thrive in harsh environments
WITH the release of Inox versions of its GR6 rectangular and GR18 cylindrical sensors, SICK has delivered rough, tough, high-availability photoelectric performers for detection duties in harsh environments such as chemical washdown or the presence of aggressive oils, lubricants and dust.
Helping networks adopt optical interfaces
The demand for greater bandwidth is present in all applications but nowhere is this more apparent than in telecommunications and data communications infrastructures. The use of fibre optics is an effective way of adding bandwidth, but it comes with the requirement of a transceiver module to terminate each end of the cable. In choppy market, industry seeks calmer waters in 2020
Trying to read the runes of the semiconductor market is no easy task right now. Malcolm Penn, CEO of research company Future Horizons isn’t shirking the challenge. Despite a rocky 2019, Penn emphasises the industry fundamentals are fine, which should speed recovery once economic confidence returns.
Opto-compatible single channel isolated gate driver for IGBTs
The UCC23513 from Texas Instruments is an opto-compatible, single-channel, isolated gate driver for IGBTs, MOSFETs and SiC MOSFETs, with 4.5A source and 5.3A sink peak output current and 5.7KVRMS reinforced isolation rating. The high supply voltage range of 33V allows the use of bipolar supplies to effectively drive IGBTs and SiC power FETs.
Effective thermal management in LEDs
Whilst LEDs are very efficient there is still an amount of electrical power that is converted into heat. To harness the best possible performance from an LED this heat needs to be effectively moved away from the LED chip at the heart of the device and dissipated into the ambient environment.
Discovery kits and firmware kickstart motor-control projects
STMicroelectronics has extended support for STM32G4 microcontrollers, delivering digital-power and motor-control Discovery Kits and adding new firmware examples in the latest STM32CubeG4 software package (v 1.1.0) to help users explore control of digital power supplies and motors for applications such as race drones, prosumer drones, and small electric vehicles.
AstraZeneca saves time and space with process controls
Creating a pharmaceutical manufacturing suite is a complex task that is governed by a host of standards and specifications. For the AstraZeneca manufacturing plant in North Ryde, Sydney, Australia, the decision to change its primary supplier of process control valves to Bürkert, reduced installation and commissioning costs while also improving process data availability.
