Distributed propulsion aircraft come to market
Multiple thrusters are one thing in aircraft. In vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) they reduce the efficiency deficit with helicopters, providing unmatched redundancy and stability in wind. However, the term distributed propulsion (DP) primarily refers to a fundamentally new form of wing that intimately blends aerodynamics with thrust and zero emissions.
The anatomy of the electric flying racing car
At Goodwood Speed Week, Airspeeder unveiled to the world the Mk3 racing prototype, a remotely-piloted craft in the form of the full-scale and functional electric flying racing car. Today, the production version of this revolutionary vehicle is being created at the sport’s technical headquarters in Adelaide, South Australia. Airspeeder is proud to confirm the technical specifications of these craft before they participate in remotely piloted...
Miniature high-density rectangular connectors save weight and space
As the demand for smaller and lighter product assemblies is driving the continued miniaturization of almost every electronic system, the need to connect these assemblies requires connector manufacturers to develop miniature connectors that take up less space yet perform the same as their larger counterparts. Particular market sectors where this demand is great include mil/aero and motorsport, areas where leading connector specialist Lane Electron...
The power analyser – the essential, virtual toolbox
The power analyser is a virtual toolbox. It integrates all the tools needed to study and optimise virtually any power project into a single instrument making it an essential tool in power system design
Advanced Engineering is back for 2021
The UK’s largest annual gathering of manufacturing, design, and test and production engineering professionals,Advanced Engineering, will return to the NEC, Birmingham on 3rd and 4th November, 2021. Here, the UK’s talented and vast engineering industry can meet again for the first time in almost two years to do business, make new connections and discover innovation.
Electric vertical take-off and landing air taxis
Many of the world's largest aerospace and automotive companies are ramping up their interest in electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, recognising their potential as a disruptive new transport mode. Toyota, for example have invested nearly $400m in eVTOL startup Joby Aviation whilst Hyundai have announced they are spending $1.5bn over five-years on developing urban air mobility operations.
Top women engineers announced for 2021
Three young women engineers have been recognised at the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards for their work in engineering.
Radiation-fault-tolerant power modules from Vicor
Vicor has announced the launch of its first radiation-fault-tolerant DC/DC converter power modules, housed in the new Vicor plated SM-ChiP package. Capable of powering low-voltage ASICs of up to 300 watts from a 100V nominal power source, the ChiPs were tested by Boeing to be resilient to 50krad of total ionising dose and immune to single-event upsets.
Alphabet again exits drones: others again jump in
In 2017, after four years of setbacks and crashes, Alphabet shut its project flying solar-powered fixed-wing drones in the upper atmosphere to beam the internet to those cut-off. Facebook then exited its similar project, but the Chinese aerospace industry, Airbus, Boeing, and NASA are progressing them very well.
Mission-critical industries need to fight the fakes
After some respite in 2019, the global shortage of electronic components worsened in 2020 due to a perfect storm of factors. Here, Jonathan Parry, Senior Vice President of Global Operations and European Managing Director at PEI-Genesis, has explained how the shortage is driving counterfeits in mission-critical sectors, and what industry needs to do to combat the counterfeits.
