Long range WAN development kits aid IoT design
A new range of LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) development kits from Semtech have been added to RS Components portfolio of tools that support engineers designing Internet of Things (IoT) applications. LoRaWAN wireless networking delivers a longer range than most common low power wireless technologies, in addition to its greater resilience to interference.
Orange joins LoRa Alliance board
Semtech has announced that the open LoRaWAN networking protocol, used in LPWANs for IoT applications, took another step toward becoming a worldwide standard when Orange S.A., one of the largest mobile network operators in Europe, officially joined the board of the 300+ member LoRa Alliance.
Industry’s first LoRa evaluation kits for LPWAN
Microchip has announced the availability of what the company claims to be the industry’s first complete LoRa technology evaluation kits. The kits provide customers with all the components required to create an LPWAN for North America in the 915MHz band (DV164140-2) or for Europe in the 868MHz band (DV164140-1).
An IoT technology that supports the roll-out phase
One of the subjects that wasn’t discussed in detail in this blog about selecting a wireless protocol for your IoT design is what happens when you have designed it? i.e. roll-out. No matter how impressive your solution, let’s not forget that from an end customer perspective, this will be one of their most important concerns. By Tim Bonnett, Director, Alpha Micro Components.
Telecomms enterprises invited to certification programme
An innovation certification programme for enterprises wishing to build knowledge and understanding of the LimeSDR app-enabled software defined radio (SDR) has been launched by Lime Microsystems.
LoRa RF technology integrated into LPWAN measuring devices
Semtech has revealed that Zenner will integrate LoRa RF technology into their water, heat, gas, smoke and electricity measuring devices being deployed in LPWANs (Low Power, Wide Area Networks) globally. By using LoRa RF technology and following the LoRaWAN specification, which is standardised by the LoRa Alliance, Zenner will give its customers the ability to easily integrate its platforms into existing LoRaWAN networks.
Wireless IoT connectivity: making sense of the protocols
Organisations designing devices and systems for the Internet of Things (IoT) today have many choices over the wireless protocols they will use to facilitate communication with the cloud. Simon Duggleby, Product Marketing Manager, Electronics Division, RS Components explains.
Ubuntu App Store announced for LimeSDR developed applications
Lime Micro has revealed that Ubuntu are putting together an App Store for LimeSDR that can be accessed once the LimeSDR crowd funding campaign successfully reaches its $500,000 pledge goal. The Snappy Ubuntu App Store will ensure the SDR apps developed with the LimeSDR board are downloadable and those developed by Lime remain completely open-sourced.
Low power radio chip for long range connectivity in sensor networks
Today’s imec annual technology forum in Brussels (ITF Brussels 2016), saw the company present a low power wide area (LPWA) multi-standard radio chip alongside Holst Centre.
Does the smart meter revolution need consumer approval?
After many years of planning and pilots, large scale smart-meter roll-outs are now happening across Europe. The UK government would like to have smart meters in all British homes by 2020, and a witty advertising campaign has explained the benefits of exact – rather than estimated – bills that ensure they will only pay for the energy they use.
