Electric & hybrid bus market to reach $100bn by 2025
IDTechEx's 'Electric Buses 2015-2025' report finds that buses will account for over 20% of the total future hybrid and pure EV value market, meaning that those seeking leadership in the market must take the bus forecasts seriously.
Will oil price changes affect EVs?
The oil price may stay low for many years due to oversupply. However, this will not affect the sales of road EVs because their sales numbers decoupled from the oil price many years ago thanks to superior performance, subsidies and privileges such as no congestion charge.
Metal oxide backplanes gain commercial ground
Metal oxide display backplanes have already gone commercial. Sharp has invested in establishing a Gen8 IGZO plant at its Kameyama plant in Japan while LG has also selected IGZO backplanes for its large-sized white OLED technology. At the same time, Chinese companies such as BOE are fast playing catch up with both prototype and production capacity announcements. By Dr Khasha Ghaffarzadeh, Head of Consulting, IDTechEx.
Report expects wearable materials market to become valuable niche
In 2025, over $25bn will be spent on formulations and intermediate materials for wearables, IDTechEx predicts in its report, ‘Wearable Technology Materials 2015-2025’.Companies at this early part of the value chain will participate in a rapidly growing market over the coming decade. These companies are expected to take a larger share of the market as some other parts of the value chain are eliminated.
3D printing market worth $20bn by 2025, report predicts
The 3D printing market surpassed $1bn in revenues during 2012, and growth is expected to continue throughout all target sectors to reach $20bn by 2025. Printer manufacturers are reporting a surge in sales, as awareness of the technology grows. This and much more is discussed and analysed in the IDTechEx report ‘3D Printing 2015-2025: Technologies, Markets, Players’.
Graphene to grow despite 'killer application' lack
2014 has been an eventful year for the graphene industry. The first round of commercial applications has already been announced, and the industry has witnessed intense investment and acquisition activity as further companies have gone public. Despite the high interest, valuations of public graphene companies have declined, returning largely to where they were at the time of their IPOs.
Report expects thermoelectric harvesting to catch on by 2018
Until 2014, there was only limited interest in thermoelectric energy harvesting and its automotive uses, explains the IDTechEx report ‘Energy Harvesting/ Regeneration for Electric Vehicles Land, Water & Air 2015-2025’. The maximum attainable efficiency, theoretically one half of that for photovoltaics, was in actuality around one tenth of theoretical at 3%. However, 2014 saw a sharp change in attitude.
Quantum dots enable spray-on wide-spectrum PV cells
Load bearing structures that are also electronic or electrical are called structural electronics. This two-for-one approach can be more reliable, attractive and long-lived and saves space. With a vehicle, saving weight also reaps dividends, such as when devices and circuits are applied experimentally to an electric car or plane that travels much further on a single charge as a consequence.
Challenge of printing electronics in 3D addressed at event
Initially 3D printing was used to make limited-functionality models and prototypes, before embarking upon the expensive business of fabricating tooling to produce a final product. In recent years however, there has been a move to adopt the technology as full-scale manufacturing solution and a wider user base which is now able to have access to desktop manufacturing platforms. The result: highly customised products and a growth in complexity (mult...
3D printing materials market expected to reach $8bn by 2025
According to a report published by IDTechEx, the 3D printing materials market is expected to increase from $800m in 2013 to $8bn by 2025.3D printing is already common in aerospace, orthopaedic, jewellery and dental sectors, and is becoming more common in education, military, architecture, medical research and automotive sectors. This is because 3D printing is no longer used just for one-off pieces and prototypes, but for final part production of ...
