Sine-waving the route to lower HV-IPD power losses
Consumers have become used to improved energy efficiency and performance of appliances built with variable-speed drives. Georges Tchouangue, Toshiba Electronics Europe believes further demands can be met using sinusoidal current control
Robots are boxing clever
A new partnership has been announced between TM Robotics and Cornerstone Automation Systems that will see the two companies collaborate to produce an intelligent box opening device (IBOD) that combines the features of TM Robotics’ Toshiba Machine robots and CASI’s intelligent box opening software.
IP subsystem for implementing 10 Gigabit Ethernet
In partnership with MoreThanIP, a provider of telecom solutions, Toshiba Semiconductor & Storage Products Company, has developed an IP subsystem designed to easily implement a 10 Gigabit Ethernet interface subsystem into a system LSI.
800 & 900V MOSFETs suit high-speed switching below 5A
Suited for switching voltage regulator designs, a range of ultra-efficient, high-speed, high-voltage MOSFETs has been unveiled by Toshiba Electronics Europe. Available with 800 and 900V ratings, the four N-channel devices have typical on resistance ratings down to just 1.9Ω. Target applications include flyback converters in LED lighting, supplementary power supplies and other circuits requiring current switching below 5A.
Semiconductor capex slow in 2016
Analysis from consultancy firm Semiconductor Intelligence has shown that the outlook for semiconductor capital expenditures (capex) in 2016 is weak. Gartner’s January 2016 forecast called for a decline of 4.7%. IC Insights in February projected a 0.8% decline. The table below shows the Gartner forecast along with the capex forecasts from the top three spenders (Intel, Samsung and TSMC) which account for about half of total industry capex.
MicroSD features 'world’s' fastest write speed
Toshiba Electronics Europe has announced a range of ultra-high-performance EXCERIA PRO UHS-II microSD cards alongside extensions to the company’s high-end EXCERIA PRO SD and EXCERIA microSD and SD card line-up. The microSD and SD cards will support the high-performance requirements of professional and advanced amateur photographers.
Robots have fun in the park but can they do push-ups?
Steve Rogerson looks at some of the recent news that may have missed the front page.I didn’t have far to go for Medicity Innovators’ Week, a medical technology event in Nottingham. However, it didn’t get off to the best start as they announced at the beginning that one of the keynote speakers had cancelled due to ill health.
USB drive offers both Type-A & -C USB connectivity
Expanding its family of high-performance TransMemory USB Flash Drives, Toshiba Electronics Europe has announced its first drive to combine Type-A and Type-C USB connectivity. The TransMemory-EX U382 is a 32GB USB pen drive offering a dual interface with both USB Type-A and USB Type-C ports, providing for quick and easy data transfer between the widest possible range of devices.
Shhhhhhh – meeting the demand for minimal noise
A 3-phase brushless motor driver IC has been introduced by Toshiba Electronics Europe. The TC78B016FTG achieves high efficiency and minimal noise at a wide range of rotational speeds without any need for complicated phase adjustment, making it well suited for use in the small fan motors found in home appliances and industrial equipment.
Laser technique promises super-secure quantum cryptography
A method of implementing an 'unbreakable' quantum cryptographic system is able to transmit information at rates more than ten times faster than previous attempts. Researchers have developed a new method to overcome one of the main issues in implementing a quantum cryptography system, raising the prospect of a useable 'unbreakable' method for sending sensitive information hidden inside particles of light.
