Constant development keeps chain at forefront of technology
Chain is one of the unsung heroes of the engineering world. Although a long established technology, it continues to develop and improve, so remains one of the most efficient methods of power transmission available today. Greg Sharp, Engineering Manager at Tsubaki Chain in Nottingham, looks at some of the recent developments and shows how they appeal to new markets.
Quad-Core IC enables planar phased array radar
A new K-band silicon SATCOM Rx quad-core integrated circuit from Anokiwave is now available from distributor Richardson Electronics. The highly-integrated AWS-0102 is intended for satellite communications applications. The device supports four dual-polarisation radiating elements with full programmable polarisation flexibility. It provides 22dB gain with a noise figure of 3.4dB.
PI Releases Tubular Piezo Stacks based on Mars Rover-Tested Multilayer Technology
Physik Instrumente recently introduced the P-080 tubular piezo stack, the newest member of the high reliability PICMA family of piezo actuators. Piezo actuators are based on solid-state motion effects and are used in applications that require any or all of the following attributes: high speed, high force, and virtually unlimited resolution.
productronica to feature cable and hybrid section
As part of its new format designed to reflect the way the industry is developing and to make it easier for visitors to navigate the show itself, productronica 2015 features a number of new "clusters" including one for cables, coils and hybrids. productronica takes place in Munich and runs from November 10 to 13.
Valtronic to participate in manufacturing day
Valtronic announces that it will participate in an upcoming Manufacturing Day at the Formtek facility on 2nd October, 2015. Formtek has gathered a group of manufacturing companies and invited high school and college students to meet at its facility, for a facility tour and various presentations. The purpose of the event is to join manufacturers across the country during the month of October, which is delegated as 'Manufacturing Month'.
Robots tread lightly to stay fast on soft ground
Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology, University of California at Berkeley and Northwestern University, have reported that soft steps and large feet can allow animals and robots to maintain high speeds on very loose soil and sand. The findings, reported in the journal Bioinspiration & Biomechanics, offer a new insight into how animals respond to different terrain and how robots can learn from them.
Conference adds 15 industry experts to presentation list
Isola Group and Semico Research announced that the inaugural Board, Chips and Packaging: Designing to Maximize Results Conference is garnering significant interest from the embedded design community with the addition of 15 industry experts added to the agenda. The one-day conference will be held on 13th October 2015 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. The event was developed to support PCB, chip and packaging-design compa...
Green storage for green energy grows cleaner
A team of Harvard scientists and engineers has demonstrated a rechargeable battery that could make storing electricity from intermittently available energy sources (e.g., sun and wind) safe and cost-effective for both residential and commercial use. The research builds on earlier work by members of the same team that could enable cheaper and more reliable electricity storage at the grid level.
