Boards support LPWAN evaluation for IoT connectivity
Two new ready-to-use prototype boards available from STMicroelectronics slash the cost for developers to start evaluating LoRaWANand other LPWAN technologies including WM-Bus and 6LoWPAN. The boards are based on the smallest and lowest-power LoRaWAN modules that exist on the market today, with a footprint not larger than 13x12mm and power consumption in the range of 1.2µA in standby mode.
Cables & modules facilitate more effective bridging to USB
FTDI Chip has added to the breadth of supporting products within its X-Chip portfolio. Firstly, there is the introduction of the highly advanced LC231X USB-to-serial UART bridging module, which is based on the company’s FT231X interface IC. This compact (15.24mm x 28.19mm) and highly cost-effective unit presents engineers with jumper-selectable power to external I/O (either 3.3V or 5V, as required) and UART interface with full modem handsha...
Post-print customisation of 3D prints
3Dprinting makes all conceivable varieties of layered, three-dimensional objects possible, a benefit appreciated by industry and private users alike. However, once an object is printed, any freedom of design is a thing of the past and the workpiece can no longer be modified. To address this restriction, computer scientists at Saarland University are working on the integration of specifically developed components at predefined points within such3D...
The world’s first luminescent LED mermaid tail
Walt Disney’s little mermaid, Ariel, wanted nothing more than to be part of our world, but as it happens, now it seems that we want nothing more than to be part of hers. But while Ariel trades her voice for legs, what would you be prepared to part with for your very own mermaid tail?
How to make fascinating music with fibre and tech
When you combine two artists with an interest in fibre art, you are bound to get an interesting project. That is definitely the case for Erin Kirchner and Suldano Abdiruhman, students at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art). Their Soundsuitexplores relationship, space and sound through woven pieces attached to original vests.
Distributor lays down Upcycle it challenge to engineers
A new Design Challenge for designers and engineers called ‘Upcycle it’ has been launched by element14. Sponsored by Intel, element14 will challenge 15 community members to Upcycle an unwanted or waste product to give it a new or enhanced lease of life. Upcycling is a concept that began in the 1990s and is also known as “Creative Reuse”. This is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted...
SST & Sparkfun collaborate on sensing hardware
In order to address the vibrant and constantly expanding maker market, SST Sensing Ltd. has partnered up with Sparkfun. Together they have developed and simple to implement solution for single point liquid detection using infrared technology. This highly reliable and accurate solution comprises an Optomax Digital liquid level switch which is connected to an Arduino board via the TTL output and powered by its 5V source.
Wireless protocols are vying for IoT dominance
Much has been written about the IoT and how it has the potential to open up opportunities and maximise the efficiency of current processes. However, the time for talking about potential is now over - it’s time to begin thinking about how to actually implement an IoT solution and reap the benefits. Mark Patrick of Mouser Electronics explains.
Reference design targets building automation prototypes
The MAXREFDES130# from Maxim Integrated is a complete reference for prototyping building automation designs. It is now being shipped by distributor Mouser Electronics. The Arduino Uno R3-form-factor shield is compatible with both Arduino and ARM mbed platforms, giving designers a choice of development ecosystems.
MEMS gyro added to portfolio of inertial products
Acal BFi announces the addition of the award winning Tronics GYPRO3300 MEMS angular rate sensor with supporting evaluation board to its comprehensive portfolio. Tronics has pushed technological boundaries of design with the GYPRO3300; the sensor utilises Tronics’ proprietary vacuum wafer-level packaging technology to deliver best-in-class performance and accuracy in an ultra-compact design, while offering a plug-and-play and open source tes...
