GNSS modules accelerate adoption of wearable devices
70% smaller than current solutions and delivering a 30% reduction in Time To First Fix (TTFF), CSR and OriginGPS announce a series of high-performance GNSS modules using CSR’s SiRFstarIV and SiRFstarV product lines. Integrating antennas, the modules are suited for health and fitness trackers, sports watches, medical devices, wearable action cameras and digital still cameras.
University of Sheffield develops 3D printed UAV
A 1.5m wide prototype unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been developed by engineers at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at the University of Sheffield. Created with a 3D printer, the engineers have claimed that the polymer craft could form the basis of cheap and potentially disposable UAVs that could be built and deployed in remote situations potentially within as little as 24 hours.

SD memory cards deliver up to 100x longer data retention
Designed for TCO-optimised applications, the S-40 and S-40u Series SD and Micro SD memory cards have been made available by Swissbit. Swissbit claim that these are the first SD and Micro SD cards on the market to feature autonomous data refresh that requires no intervention by the host or application. Further to these claims, Swissbit also boast that intelligent algorithms enable the memory cards to deliver up to 100x longer data retention than c...
Energy harvesting for ultra-low power sensors
The considerable potential for energy harvesting in the field of medical implants — where the body itself could become the energy source — means the efforts to enable ultra-low power circuits and sensors to exploit energy harvesting are accelerating, enabling autonomous operation and battery-free design to be realised.
