An ‘affordable’ electric car
The much anticipated Model 3 has been launched by Tesla, and with a price tag of £24,423 and a claimed range of around 215 miles per charge, it’s the company’s lowest cost vehicle to date. The price tag puts the vehicle within the average cost bracket for the US auto market, making the car a far more realistic proposition for the average person.
Tesla Motors returns to CWIEME in 2016
After a packed seminar at CWIEME Chicago in October last year, Dr. Konstantinos Laskaris, principal motor designer at Tesla Motors, will be joining other leaders in the design and manufacture of electric motors and transformers this May in the 2016 CWIEME Berlin seminar programme.
Invest in the right battery markets: New opportunities
Many interests have been raised within the battery business in 2015 through a number of activities: the launch of Tesla’s Powerwall with low prices supported by the capability of Gigafactory; Apple’s patent relating to charging and managing power in a device with solid-state batteries; LG Chem's opening of a mega battery plant in Nanjing; Bosch’s purchase of polymer solid-state battery company Seeo, etc.
Can you detect a driverless car based on behaviour?
Members of the public are being sought to take part in a new study by the University of Southampton to understand people’s perceptions of automated vehicles.Participants will be required to view a series of four to five second videos of a car (a white Tesla Model S) making lane changes, while driving down the motorway, and to decide whether it is being driven by a human driver or a computer.
A round up of the 10th Battery Experts Forum
Which took place from 5th until 7th April 2016 in Aschaffenburg’s city hall, the 10th Battery Experts Forum, formerly known as 'Developer Forum Battery Technology', impressed attendees with an even more comprehensive programme than in the years before.
Increasing drone flight times
The battery is the beating heart of a drone. The performance of the battery is the key factor in determining the drone’s range and how much payload it can carry – particularly relevant when you consider the delivery applications envisaged for drones by the likes of Amazon and Google.
Let’s wirelessly charge everything
Nicolette Emmino discusses the evolution of wireless charging and what we can expect to see as the technology develops. We are hearing about wireless charging more and more - electric vehicle makers are working on it, cellphones have become compatible, even furniture has the ability to wirelessly charge devices. There’s even some speculation that the next iPhone will be equipped with wireless charging capabilities.
EV report card gives auto industry failing grades in 2016
With few EVs passing key performance benchmarks of driving range and cost, the automotive industry received an overall failing grade for its EV offerings. In the inaugural 2016 edition of Lux Research’s annual 'EV Inflection Tracker', the industry earned just 27 out of a possible 100 rating, mainly because of high costs and limited offerings with a driving range of over 200 miles.
Startup bringing driverless taxi service to Singapore
An exciting "driverless race" is underway among tech giants the United States: In recent months, Google, Uber, and Tesla have made headlines for developing self-driving taxis for big cities. But a comparatively small MIT spinout, nuTonomy, has entered the race somewhat under the radar. The startup is developing a fleet of driverless taxis to serve as a more convenient form of public transit while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the dens...
Physicists build ultra-powerful accelerator magnet
Recent tests revealed that the United States and CERN have successfully co-created a prototype superconducting accelerator magnet that is much more powerful than those currently inside the Large Hadron Collider. Engineers will incorporate more than 20 magnets similar to this model into the next iteration of the LHC, which will take the stage in 2026 and increase the LHC's luminosity by a factor of ten. That translates into a ten-fold increase in ...
