Precision motion is rising to the challenges of photonics
Just as 20th Century engineers relied on electric motors, 21st Century engineers are turning to lasers and fibre optics to create machines and technologies that will change the world and redefine life as we know it. Here, Gerard Bush of motion experts INMOCO explains how the precision optical systems required are pushing the boundaries of drives and controls.
Fibre optic sensing spin-off launched
Ghent University (UGent) and imec have announced the incorporation of Sentea, a spin-off from their world leading Photonics Research Group. An initial €1.6m in funding was raised from Fidimec, Finindus, PMV and QBIC II and the founders. Sentea will develop and market advanced silicon photonics based fibre optic sensing solutions.
Dynamic photodiode integration project
Swiss technology firm known for its breakthrough Dynamic PhotoDiodes (DPDs), ActLight, has announced that it has signed an agreement with a top semiconductor company for the integration and licensing of the DPD into their Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) for vital signs monitoring, to be used in the next generation of wearable devices.
Accreditation ensuring highest accuracy NIST-traceable measurements
It has been announced by MKS Instruments that Ophir Photonics has received ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for its Jerusalem, Israel Calibration Laboratory. ISO/IEC 17025 is given to calibration laboratories who have achieved the highest standards of quality, administration, and technical operations.
Harnessing photonics to develop faster internet networks
A group of EU-funded researchers are incorporating VCSEL laser sources with silicon photonics to develop long wavelength, high capacity communications for the very first time, paving the way for light-speed metropolitan connectivity, and powering new ‘smart’ services like future gaming and on-demand TV.
Unlocking market opportunity with laser technology
It has been announced that LASER World of PHOTONICS INDIA is returning to Bengaluru this year from 26th to 29th September at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, where participants will benefit from more technologies on display, as well as experience learning and networking programs.
3D printing colloidal crystals
MIT engineers have united the principles of self-assembly and 3D printing using a new technique, which they highlight today in the journalAdvanced Materials.By their direct-write colloidal assembly process, the researchers can build centimeter-high crystals, each made from billions of individual colloids, defined as particles that are between 1nm and 1μm cross.
