The role of SCADA in an Industry 4.0 environment
The era of Industry 4.0 heralds a model where individual production systems will no longer work in isolation but will be connected to business systems and be able to quickly adapt to changing needs. So, is there a place for SCADA in this emerging picture?Carl Nash, the enabler for the Smart Factory of the future, also known as aTechnical Director at Products4Automation, explains, SCADA.
Smart water monitoring Down Under
Providing high quality water supplies is an essential service delivered by municipal authorities and utility companies around the world. Maintaining water quality requires constant monitoring and testing to ensure accurate measurements are being taken. Traditionally this has involved time-consuming calibration and maintenance.
Cloud based SCADA
By transferring its multi-faceted MAPS SCADA / HMI solution to a secure cloud-based app, Mitsubishi Electric is offering potentially the best of both worlds; an advanced solution that is flexible and easy to integrate, but is also well supported, stable and secure in operation.
Bringing security for industrial devices to the next level
Smart factories and connected supply chains are presenting manufacturing companies with opportunities. Sophisticated automation and self-optimisation through machine-learning and AI are promising highly optimised processes and increased production efficiency – hence more productivity with the same input. Reflex array sensors on the leading edge
SICK has unveiled its next-generation family of smart photoelectric light array sensors, the RAY10 and RAY26, to reliably detect even difficult-to-see objects in electronics and surface mount production. The SICK RAY10 and RAY26 Reflex Array Sensors create a wide 2D light band to reliably detect small, flat, clear or irregularly-shaped objects with protrusions or leading edges that are just a few millimetres thick.
HMI maximises display space and improves visibility
The release of the new HG5G-V 15” human-machine interface (HMI) touchscreen, has been announced by IDEC Corporation as the largest model in the High-Performance family. This HMI offers more display real estate so applications can readily show extensive process information with improved aesthetics and visibility.
HMI/machine controller enclosures now in standard sizes
ROLEC’s new profiPANEL HMI/control enclosures are now available in four standard sizes, with a four-step easy specification process. IP 65 rated profiPANEL Standard’s minimalist multi-variable design makes it ideal for a wide range of modern machine control applications. It can be mounted from the top or bottom on ROLEC’s profiPLUS 50 suspension arm system.
Industrial food cutting becomes a piece of cake
Mitsubishi Electric has assisted Western Mechanical Handling (WMH) to develop a fully automated inline cell for cutting and slicing food of any size and shape on the fly. The solution is based on Mitsubishi Electric’s MELSEC Q series high-performance PLC, plus system-matched components including HMI, variable speed drives and two MELFA articulated arm robots. The resulting machine maximises performance, flexibility and productivity for cust...
Ten key tips for building better HMIs
Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) provide us with the means via which to interact with modern technology. They are available in a variety of forms, but regardless of the type that is employed, their purpose is to enable control functions to be carried while at the same time ensuring that the user experience is a satisfying one. Reduce HMI interface development times
The newly released Movicon.NExT Project Builder provides a well suited environment to develop the HMI aspect of a project alongside the control / PLC based core automation functionality. This saves time and adds convenience for system integrators and machine builders alike.
