High-speed electronics and photonics R&D centre to attract top talent
Imec Florida, a new entity focusing on photonics and high-speed electronics IC design based in Osceola, Florida has been announced by imec. Imec Florida kicked off with the signing of a collaboration agreement with the University of Central Florida (UCF), Osceola County and the International Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research (ICAMR), that is setting up fab facilities for the development and production of highly innovative III-V-on-si...
Increasing bioethanol production with bacteria and yeast
Scientists from Illinois Institute of Technology received a patent for a method to genetically engineer bacteria and yeast to increase bioethanol production, especially from cellulosic material in biomass like twigs, branches, plant stalks and husks, and woodchips.
Improving performance by controlling oxygen activity
An international team of researchers has demonstrated a way to increase the robustness and energy storage capability of a particular class of "lithium-rich" cathode materials - by using a carbon dioxide-based gas mixture to create oxygen vacancies at the material's surface. Researchers said the treatment improved the energy density - the amount of energy stored per unit mass - of the cathode material by up to 30 to 40%.
Global IoT challenge focuses on food, water, health & safety
Semtech has announced that its LoRa wireless RF solution will be featured in the second Global IoT challenge presented by the LoRa Alliance. The challenge is focused on creating a safer, smarter and more sustainable world and, in partnership with the Red Cross in Kenya, will accept solutions from four categories: food, water, health and safety.
Water-cooled power controller offers extended lifespan
The REOTRON MDW 700WK offers reliable regulation of current, power and voltage as well as integrated current and voltage monitoring from absolute zero to 10V. The module can be easily switched between two modes; three phase-angle, ideal for controlling ripple sensitive electrical loads, and burst-fire up to 3x450A, better suited to applications that require low radio frequency interference (RFI).
First large scale road test for smart vehicles launched in China
The launch and implementation of China’s first ever large-scale road test initiative for intelligent connected vehicles through the NXP-Tongji University Joint Lab is to be supported byNXP Semiconductors and Tongji University.
Improving Europe’s industrial policy on cybersecurity
Infineon Technologies takes an active role in the development of European-level cybersecurity guidelines. The European Commission has signed the contract for a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) with the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) ASBL. Representing the private sector, ECSO will work directly with the European Commission to improve Europe’s industrial policy on cybersecurity.
Data acquisition system certifies business jet noise
Dassault Aviation has performed noise certification tests on their new Falcon 8X business jet, using an acoustic data acquisition and analysis system from Brüel & Kjær. Exterior aircraft noise certification tests are required by aviation regulators. The tests establish certified aircraft Effective Perceived Noise Levels (EPNLs) for each of the flight conditions: approach, flyover and sideline.
Next-gen large capacity airships to be developed
The European partnership between Flying Whales and Skeleton Technologies will ensure that graphene ultracapacitor technology powers next-gen large, heavy-lift airships for industrial applications in China and France. Europe’s leading ultracapacitor manufacturer Skeleton Technologies will join French firm Flying Whales’ programme to build a 60-ton Large Capacity Airship, or LCA60T, for the global transport market.
