A simple way to gain control of magnetism
While the ability to easily control the magnetic properties of small electronic systems is highly desirable for future small electronics and data storage, an effective solution has proven to be extremely elusive. But now, a group of researchers from universities in Chile and Brazil are reporting in the Journal of Applied Physics, from AIP Publishing, a simple way to gain control of magnetism that starts by controlling the shape of the systems.
When cold helium atoms behave like a black hole
A team of scientists has discovered that a law controlling the bizarre behaviour of black holes out in space is also true for cold helium atoms that can be studied in laboratories."It'scalled an entanglement area law," says Adrian Del Maestro, a physicist at the University of Vermont who co-led the research. That this law appears at both the vast scale of outer space and at the tiny scale of atoms, "is weird," Del Maestro says, "and it points to ...
Eighth generation chain design provides endurance standards
Launching the G8 Series (the eighth-generation) of the RS Roller Chain and its Heavy Duty Drive Chain, Tsubaki has designed the G8 RS Roller Chain to offer a 20% improvement in service life over the previous designs. The RS Roller Chain is the company’s standard, designed to meet the needs of most applications, and the Heavy Duty Drive Chain is an endurance chain with a high maximum allowable tension for particularly demanding situations.
‘Liquid’ metal curves created for Corby heritage sculpture
Celebrating the heritage of Corby, a new stainless steel sculpture has been fabricated and precision curved by metal bending company, Barnshaws Section Benders. The ‘Sundew Sculpture’ designed by renowned artist John Atkin, was opened on the 20th January 2017 outside Corby train station, with its geometric complexity paying homage to Corby’s steel industry and the town’s passion for music.
Laser triangulation sensor measures cylinder thickness and diameter
RIFTEK has recently designed and supplied a customised scanning system that automatically measures and records geometric parameters for welded cylindrical laminated foil tubes. The RF092 machine employs three RIFTEK laser triangulation sensors that are rotated around the sample tube and combine to measure the multi-layered foil thickness as well as the weld overlap and depth, in addition to the tube length and its diameter.
Deep groove ball bearings have high performance seal option
SKF is making its high performance RSH seal design available on a larger range of SKF Explorer deep groove ball bearings. The tried and tested RSH seal uses a highly optimised dual-lip configuration to provide additional protection in demanding environments. For users, the result is bearings that last longer, especially in wet, contaminated or dusty operating conditions, and that need to be replaced less frequently.
Ball screws replace hydraulics in powder presses
The hydraulic drives from Switzerland-based Osterwalder are being replaced with servo-electric drives featuring NSK HTF series ball screws in its latest range of powder presses. As a result, users of the new systems can achieve a reduction in energy consumption of around 80% and produce pressed parts with far higher dimensional accuracy. This reduces the amount of finishing work, such as grinding with diamond wheels, and cuts process and material ...
LucidShape software suits automotive lighting simulation
Synopsys announced the commercial availability of its LucidShapeCAA V5 Based software product, which allows designers to perform optical simulations and analyses of automotive lighting products within the CATIA V5 environment. After a successful beta release in October 2016, Synopsys is shipping a general release version of the product as of March 6, 2017.
Total turbomachinery solution
SoftInWay and OPEN MIND Technologies AG have announced a cooperation agreement to provide a complete solution for the design, development and manufacturing of gas turbine components and other types of turbomachinery.
Reducing the risk for advanced medical wearables
Altium Designer is playing a key role for a developer of wearable electronics for the medical industry, by embracing flexible design and reducing manufacturing risk.
