NASA's spacecraft to fly over Jupiter's great red spot
Only days after celebrating its first anniversary in Jupiter orbit, NASA's Juno spacecraft will fly directly over Jupiter's Great Red Spot, the gas giant's iconic, 10,000m wide (16,000km wide) storm. This will be humanity's first up-close and personal view of the gigantic feature - a storm monitored since 1830 and possibly existing for more than 350 years.
Top ten features for DSEI 2017 confirmed
Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) will mark its tenth edition when it takes place this September at ExCeL London. With only ten weeks until the event’s opening, the top features have been listed, which combine to make DSEI ‘the event for the entire defence and security industry to conduct business’.
Space research centre at the heart of RAF Henlow regeneration
Acommercial deep sea to space research, training and test centre, called Blue Abyss,is in the middle of a multi-million pound regeneration vision to develop a science, innovation and technology park on part of a soon-to-close RAF base site in Bedfordshire.
Radiation-exposed corals may hold insights on cancer
More than 70 years after the U.S. tested atomic bombs on a ring of sand in the Pacific Ocean called Bikini Atoll, Stanford researchers are studying how long-term radiation exposure there has affected corals that normally grow for centuries without developing cancer. The researchers’ work is featured in an episode of “Big Pacific,” a five-week PBS series about species, natural phenomena and behaviors of the Pacific Ocean.
Emigration to Mars – the next giant leap for mankind?
Australia, France or … Mars? When considering a place to emigrate to, the red planet might not feature very highly in your list, but according to a YouGov survey commissioned for BBC Radio 4's Mars Week, more than one in ten of Brits would accept a one-way ticket there.Yes, you read that correctly – because the Mars One mission is looking to colonise Mars, the first voyagers will not be able to return back to Earth.
Instrument to search for life in outer solar system
An instrument originally developed to search for organic molecules on Mars is being repurposed to potentially hunt for life on a handful of moons in the outer solar system that appear to host oceans, geysers and vents of ice volcanoes. Will Brinckerhoff, a NASA scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, helped build a mass spectrometer for the European Space Agency’s 2020 ExoMars Rover mission.

NASA simulates space radiation on Earth
In each life a little rain must fall, but in space, one of the biggest risks to astronauts’ health is radiation 'rain'. NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP) is simulating space radiation on Earth following upgrades to the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. These upgrades help researchers on Earth learn more about the effects of ionising space radiation, to hel...
Window improves the view on orbiting laboratory
One of the busiest work stations on the International Space Station got a major upgrade recently, and it already has saved dozens of hours on a variety of experiments for crew members aboard the orbiting laboratory. The Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) is a sealed and enclosed work area installed in the U.S. Destiny lab on the space station, and is about the size of a 70-gallon fish tank.
Machine learning can help diagnose genetic disorders
In a new study published inScientific Reports, the researchers used machine learning to analyse hundreds of voice recordings and accurately identify individuals with a genetic condition known as fragile X premutation, which increases the risk of developing neurodegenerative disorders, infertility or having a child with fragile X syndrome.
