Synchronous motor sets world record in energy efficiency
The world record for electric motor efficiency has been set by ABB, after tests carried out on a 44MW 6-pole synchronous ABB motor shortly before delivery showed an efficiency 0.25% greater than the 98.8% stipulated in the contract. This efficiency improvement could save approximately $500,000 in electrical energy costs over the course of a 20-year lifetime for each motor.
Motor safety protection improved
You may have heard about standard changes covering the non-sparking and increased safety protection concepts, if you use motors for explosive atmospheres. A revised edition (5.0) of IEC 60079-7, which covers the increased safety protection concept, was published in mid-2015 and approved as a European EN standard later the same year. The main change is that the technical requirements for increased safety have expanded to include those for the non-...
Looking at the evolution of the trusted elevator
It was back in March 1857, that the world’s first successful safe passenger elevator was designed by Elisha Otis and installed in the five-story 24m tall Haughwout Building on Broadway in New York City. It cost $300 and moved at about 20cm per second. This development led to exciting times. As designers and architects began to appreciate the possibilities offered by elevators, much higher buildings became feasible, eventually leading to the ...

Hacking your heart rate
Having discovered that pacemakers could be hacked, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recalling nearly half-a-million devices from St Jude Medical (now Abbotts). The vulnerable firmware covers any device sold before 28th August. This is the first time a fix has been available.
Pacemaker firmware update addresses vulnerabilities
Abbott has notified physicians of updates to its implantable pacemakers and defibrillators as part of its ongoing commitment to continuously improve patient care. The new device updates include a Battery Performance Alert for our implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) that provides physicians with earlier warning of the potential for the low risk of premature battery depletion.
HeartMate 3 LVAD receives FDA Approval
Abbott has announced it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its Full MagLevHeartMate 3Left Ventricular Assist System (also known as an LVAD). The HeartMate 3 system provides a new option for physicians managing advanced heart failure patients in need of short-term hemodynamic support (bridge-to-transplant or bridge to myocardial recovery).
