Diya Vincent and Chris Kalogroulishave been awarded the top prizes in The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition.
Digital health passport to kick-start return to sport
VST Enterprises Ltd (VSTE) the British cyber security company founded by tech entrepreneur Louis-James Davis has announced a ‘sports digital health passport’ style app to help kick start attendance at all British sporting events over the coming months as Britain emerges and recovers from COVID-19.
Electric plug socket provides energy efficient solutions
With smart technology enhancing modern living by offering improved ease, convenience and functionality, the electric plug socket remains outdated and inflexible, until now. myDOQ powers and charges appliances and devices, thanks to its interchangeable front modules that can be simply and quickly swapped. This concept provides flexible and energy efficient solutions for all current and future electrical needs.
PHY transceiver solutions with high-speed technology
Marvell has introduced a dual 400GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) PHY transceiver with 100GbE serial electrical I/O capabilities, designed to drive next-generation, secured high-density optical infrastructure. Data growth continues to put unprecedented demand on data centres and cloud providers, spurring the need for innovative technologies that can provide higher throughputs with enhanced energy efficiency.
Empowering women in manufacturing
Here, industry trailblazers Andrea Thompson (BAE Systems), Andrea Hough (ATEC Engineering Solutions) and Donna Edwards (Made Smarter) have said that manufacturing SMEs can inspire a generation and close the gender gap for women in engineering.
Sensor-enabled headphones designed to improve sleep
With a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015 with over 8,400 backers and $1.9m raised, the Kokoon headphones use the same technology currently being used in sleep labs to sense brainwaves combined with three layers of noise cancelling, including white noise, and an app that tracks sleep cycles.
Raspberry Pi starter kit kick starts embedded computing
Exclusive to Farnell is a Raspberry Pi 4 Starter Kit, featuring the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B computer and a range of Farnell’s own brand Multicomp Pro products.
Flexible connector reduces size of portable electronics
Hirose has expanded its compact flexible connector portfolio of flexible printed circuit (FPC) / flexible flat cable (FFC) connectors to meet the demands of portable device manufacturers. The TF13 Series back flip FPC / FFC connector features a small 0.4mm pitch, 0.9mm height, and 3.0mm mounting depth that minimises PCB mounting area requirements.
Increasing sustainability of distributed energy systems
Continuous power supply is critical to maintain commercial, industrial and hospital/medical facilities. As a result, facilities must have robust power systems to continue operations in the event of a grid outage. Most of these systems are powered by diesel generators. By Tim Kelley, Director of Renewable and Storage Solutions at Russelectric, A Siemens Business.
Small linear thermistors reach new thermal limits
Texas Instruments (TI) has expanded its temperature sensing portfolio to include linear thermistors that deliver up to 50% higher accuracy than negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors. The higher accuracy of TI’s thermistors enables operation closer to the thermal limits of the other components and the overall system, helping engineers maximise performance while reducing bill-of-materials (BOM) and total solution cost.
