COTS+ tantalum capacitors suit critical military systems
AVX has released a COTS+ version of its TCR Professional Series polymer tantalum chip capacitors. Designed for use in critical military systems, the TCB series features conductive polymer electrodes, which enable extremely low ESR and reduce the potential for ignition failure. Each batch undergoes lot conformance testing and additional reliability level verification in order to provide higher reliability than standard polymer tantalum capacitors.
PHS capacitor targets mission critical applications
Manufactured by placing T550 or T551 PHS (Polymer Hermetic Seal) capacitors in parallel, the M55 Module PHS capacitor portfolio has been announced by KEMET. KEMET's M550 and M551 modular series are designed for mission critical high capacitance and voltage applications in markets such as telecomms, computer, defence and aerospace.
imec extends its GaN-on-Si R&D programme
Nano-electronics research centre imec has announced that it is extending its Gallium Nitride-on-Silicon (GaN-on-Si) R&D programme, and is now offering joint research on GaN-on-Si 200mm epitaxy and enhancement mode device technology.
X-rays reveal catalytic converter interactions
How do catalytic converters work? Scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) studied the reactions under close-to-reality conditions: With the help of X-rays, they observed the interactions of the nitrogen monoxide pollutant molecule and of the reduction agent ammonia with iron and copper centers, i.e. transition metal ions in Fe-ZSM-5 and Cu-SSZ-13, where the reaction takes place.
100W 2:1 input 16th brick DC/DC converters
Semiconductor Circuits has expanded the power rating of its Cool Power Technologies wide input range 16th brick DC/DC converter series. The open frame modules now provide up to 100W of output power at voltages of 2.5, 3.3, 5.0 and 12VDC, making them suitable for distributed power architecture applications or as a fully regulated intermediate bus converter.
ADCs eliminate typical design trade-offs
A pair of 32-bit delta-sigma ADCs that combine high resolution, low noise and integrated fault detection, eliminating many of the performance and features trade-offs typically associated with device evaluation and selection, have been introduced by Texas Instruments. The highly integrated, sensor-ready ADS1262 and ADS1263 also remove the need for external components that increase system cost and degrade noise and drift performance.
Adaptive COT converters offer excellent transient response
Providing low-voltage regulation with high efficiency and excellent transient response, two adaptive, COT (Constant On-Time) mode synchronous buck converters have been introduced by Diodes Incorporated. The AP65355 and AP65455 offer high DC output accuracy at continuous output currents of 3 and 4A, respectively, for applications such as consumer electronics, network systems and 'green' electronics.
GaN - promise to reality
The next generation of power electronics is taking shape, argues Markus Behet, EpiGaN. The wide-bandgap compound semiconductor material is suited for switching devices that operate at high frequencies without suffering major losses.
Falls from height were the most common cause of fatalities in 2013
According to Health & Safety Executive (HSE) statistics, falls from height were the most common cause of fatalities, accounting for nearly three in ten (29%) fatal injuries to workers in 2013 to 2014. In total, there were 5952 fatal, major or over seven day RIDDOR reportable accidents reported during this same time period as a result of working from height.
60W push-pull DC/DC converters operate at 70kHz
MTM Power GmbH has announced its PCMDS60W series of DC/DC converters, specifically designed for applications in rail and vehicle technology, but also for use in industrial and telecomms applications. These primary switched DC/DC converters are available with an output power of 60W and operate according to the push-pull principle with a frequency of approximately 70kHz.
