120W DC/DC converters are suited for harsh environments
TDK has announced the 12, 24 and 28V output HQA DC/DC converters, with additional output voltage models to be added in the coming months. Packaged in a ruggedised quarter brick form factor, the encapsulated HQA120 models can deliver 120W output power and will operate over a 9 to 40V input range (50V for 1 second). These 89% efficient converters are suitable for use in COTS, communications and industrial equipment.
The capacitive power supply that promises 99% efficiency
A patented technique using switched capacitor charge pumps to produce small, efficient power supplies and inverters could spell the end for transformer-based systems. Sally Ward-Foxton reports.
Current sensors provide sensitivity down to 26.7mV/A
Expanding its portfolio of current sensing devices based on cutting-edge implementation of Hall effect technology, Melexis has announced the MLX91210 family. Running off a 5V supply, the MLX91210 ICs have current sensitivity levels down to 26.7mV/A and support linear current measurement ranges that span as far as ±75A corresponding to 30ARMS current.
The technology behind fuel-efficient electric cars
An £830K research project to speed up the shift from fossil-fuel reliant to greener, quieter and cheaper electric vehicles, using low carbon propulsion technologies, is being run at The University of Nottingham. The research, led by an EPSRC Challenge Network in Automotive Power Electronics, aims to support innovation in electrically-powered drive trains to benefit the entire UK automotive supply chain.
14W DC/DC converters suit railway applications
The DC/DC converters of the PMGS/PCMGS14series from MTM Power have been designed for transport and railway applications where low-ranged power is needed. The devices operate at a nominal input voltage of 72or 110VDC and supply an output voltage of 24VDC (12 and 48VDC on request) with a high efficiency of over 90 %. The PMGS/PCMGS14 are available with an input reverse polarity protection by a series diode and are continuous short circuit protected.
Compact 1 & 2W converters target medical applications
Providing a 1500VAC input/output isolation at a 250VAC working voltage to facilitate a 1 x MOPP, XP Power has announced the IMM series of 1 and 2W DC/DC converters. The IMM01 1W and the IMM02 2W single and dual output converters are approved to the international medical safety standards ANSI/AMII ES60601-1, CSA 22.2 No 60601-1 and EN/IEC60601-1.
Using less platinum in chemistry improves clean industries
Researchers have developed a way to use less platinum in chemical reactions commonly used in the clean energy, green chemicals, and automotive industries, according to a paper inScience.Led by the University of New Mexico in collaboration with Washington State University, the researchers developed a unique approach for trapping platinum atoms that improves the efficiency and stability of the reactions.
Fork plug custom designed for PCBs
A fork plug for printed circuit boards has been custom designed by Multi-Contact. The lightweight but rugged connector can be used with power electronics modules such as inverters so that they can be quickly slid in and out of racks during maintenance.
