Nylon fibres made to flex like muscles
Artificial muscles — materials that contract and expand somewhat like muscle fibres do — can have many applications, from robotics to components in the automobile and aviation industries. Now, MIT researchers have come up with one of the simplest and lowest-cost systems yet for developing such “muscles,” in which a material reproduces some of the bending motions that natural muscle tissues perform. The key ingredient, cheap...
Latest trends in conductive inks
Recent IDTechEx Research analysis has shown that the conductive ink business was on the cusp of rapid and comprehensive change. According toDr Khasha Ghaffarzadeh, Research Director at IDTechEx, changing business dynamics has forced many suppliers to change strategy, focusing on emerging and nascent applications in the hope that some will grow in the future to compensate for the commoditization and/or decline in core markets.
Connectors have crimp terminations for tough conditions
New versions of the binder range of M12 A and B coded connectors are now available with crimp termination that complement the existing screw clamp, IDT and wire clamp versions. These new versions withstand high levels of vibration and shock and are ideal for fitting to inductive sensors instrumentation and controls systems.
Panel-mount connector variants fitted with Ethernet cable
The extensive range of binder M8 panel-mount connectors has been enhanced with the introduction of new male and female connectors with Ethernet cable. Mounted from inside the panel and fixed with an M10 nut on the outside, the connectors are pre-installed on 0.5m of CAT 5e Ethernet cable for wiring into an Ethernet switch.
Sensor connectors showcased at Coventry show
A complete range of its connectors, including its innovative industrial connectors and market leading M5, M8 and M12 sensor connectors will be displayed by binder at the Electronic Design Show in Coventry (October 18-19).A number of new products will be featured including the grey/white (RAL9002) versions of its innovative snap-in IP67 series 620/720 connectors and its unique non-connected closed series 770 connectors.
Treating graphene with lasers to enable paper electronics
Researchers in Jonathan Claussen's lab at Iowa State University have been looking for ways to use graphene and its properties in their sensors and other technologies.Graphene is a wonder material: The carbon honeycomb is just an atom thick. It's great at conducting electricity and heat; it's strong and stable. But researchers have struggled to move beyond tiny lab samples for studying its properties to larger pieces for real-world applications.
VGCF production capacity expanded for use in automotive LIBs
To improve electrical conductivity, Showa Denko (SDK) has decided to expand production capacity for Vapour Grown Carbon Fibre (VGCF): carbon nanofiber added to cathodes and anodes of Lithium Ion Batteries (LIBs).Specifically, SDK will gradually increase its VGCF(TM) production capacity at Kawasaki Plant, Kanagawa Prefecture, from 200 at present to 300t/y by the end of 2017, to meet growing demand for large LIBs used in cars.
Power connectors enhanced with three pole versions
The extensive range of binder M12 s-coded power connectors has been enhanced with the introduction of new three pole (2+PE) versions with a pre-engaging contact and featuring both field attachable cable and panel mount versions with wires. Previously only available in 4-pole (3+PE), these new versions are ideal for mains voltage (250V) applications.
Sealing kit enhances harsh environment connector
The recently introduced Binder HEC (Harsh Environment Connector) now has a single wire sealing kit for fitting to the rear of panel mount connectors suitable for sealing signal wires up to 1.5mm2(AWG 16) and power wires up to 2.5mm2(AWG).This ensures that the rear of the connector inside the panel is sealed to IP67 and provides effective protection against humidity on the connection side.
A pocketful of connectors
Available for Apple and Android devices, Binder has introduced a new mobile app for its range of industrial connectors – the app is suited to smartphones and tablets. The app offers fast access to technical information and product data with options that include search by product family, series or part number and allows product datasheets to be emailed or printed wirelessly.
