'Make with Ada' programming competition offers €5000 prize
AdaCore has announced the launch of its 2nd annual 'Make with Ada' programming competition, a contest that aims to help the embedded software community improve the quality of their code by encouraging the use of the Ada and SPARK programming languages. The competition runs from 15 May to 15 September, 2017, and offers over €8000 in total prizes. Participants can register for the competition athere.
Physics could bring faster solutions for computational problems
Researchers from the University of Central Florida and Boston University have developed a novel approach to solve difficult computational problems more quickly. As inNature Communications, they've discovered a way of applying statistical mechanics, a branch of physics, to create more efficient algorithms that can run on traditional computers or a new type of quantum computational machine, said Professor Eduardo Mucciolo, chair of the Department o...
Powerful green laser will help experiments at the RHIC
Aligning a sequence of amplifiers and mirrors with hair-thin precision on a tabletop anchored to a steel block deep underground, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have produced a powerful green laser. The light-the highest average power green laser ever generated by a single fiber-based laser-will be crucial to experiments in nuclear physics at the Lab's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).
Secure Modbus protocol communication for IIoT systems
A new Modbus protocol detection and extraction capabilities provided by the deep packet inspection (DPI) engine R&S PACE 2 has been released by Rohde & Schwarz Cybersecurity. The DPI engine delivers Modbus content and metadata extraction and enables IT security equipment vendors to gain full visibility of Modbus protocol communication in order to detect vulnerabilities and provide protection for the IIoT.
Portable Positive Airway Pressure system can be used anywhere
Royal Philips has announced the launch of DreamStation Go, its newest and smallest positive airway pressure (PAP) device designed to simplify travel for patients living with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). At half the size of Philips’ previous generation devices, DreamStation Go delivers the same clinically-proven performance and comfort, for reliable, convenient therapy on-the-go.
Aiming for a hat-trick at the WEC
This year marks another year of cooperation between DMGMORI and the Porsche LMP1 Team in the FIA World Endurance Championship.Porsche returned to the FIA WorldEnduranceChampionship(WEC) with its own LMP1 Team and DMG MORI as its exclusive premium partner in 2014.
Research focuses on nasal drug delivery into brain
Delivering life-saving drugs directly to the brain in a safe and effective way is a challenge for medical providers. One key reason: the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain from tissue-specific drug delivery. Methods such as an injection or a pill aren’t as precise or immediate as doctors might prefer, and ensuring delivery right to the brain often requires invasive, risky techniques.
Complex adhesion problems solved with Plasma
Whether bonding metal to plastic, silicon to glass, polymers to other polymers of different durometers, biological content to polymeric microtiter plates or even bonding to PTFE, plasma can be used to promote adhesion. This according to Michael Barden of PVA TePla, a company that designs and manufactures plasma systems.
Size does matter when it comes to wind farms
A team of Danish researchers have developed a method to assess the efficiency of different sized onshore and offshore wind farms. The team investigated whether the farm power density - the power per unit area - of very large wind farms was limited, and related this to their efficiency and annual energy production. The study used regional atmospheric model simulations to assess the power production and wind speed through the farm area.
Cannabis can reverse aging processes in the brain
Memory performance decreases with increasing age. Cannabis can reverse these ageing processes in the brain. This was shown in mice by scientists at the University of Bonn with their colleagues at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Old animals were able to regress to the state of two-month-old mice with a prolonged low-dose treatment with a cannabis active ingredient. This opens up options, for instance, when it comes to treating dementia. The re...
