Canada’s carbon pricing strategy makes polluters pay
In Canada, 97% of people live in provinces that already have a price on carbon pollution. In a move to tackle pollution and reduce emissions, the Canadian government is planning to introduce pollution caps and fuel taxes in the two remaining provinces who have not put in place their own system in 2018, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

3D-printed patch guides growing blood vessels
Ischemia results when narrowed, hardened or blocked blood vessels starve tissue, often resulting in heart attack, stroke, gangrene and other serious conditions. Surgery can correct the problem in large vessels, but treatment is much more complex in vessels that are smaller or damaged by prior treatment. Professor Christopher Chen, director of the Biological Design Center, is developing a method using 3D-printed patches infused with cells that off...
Automated systems contribute to safer rubbish collection
Together with Swedish waste management company Renova,Volvo Trucks is currently testing and researching how automated vehicles can contribute to safer, more efficient refuse handling and create a better working environment for drivers. The automated systems being tested are in principle the same as those fitted to the autonomous Volvo truck operating in the Kristineberg Mine in northern Sweden since autumn 2016.

Made to measure: 3D software tailors jet suit
DesignSpark Mechanical 3D modelling software tool from RS Components (RS) was used in the development of the ‘Daedalus’ jet-engine flight suit, which was demonstrated at a recent TED conference in Vancouver. The ‘Daedalus’ flight suit is the brainchild of Richard Browning, who early last year began working on his vision to create a viable anti-gravity jet-engine suit, as well as building a company that could re-imagine hum...
From banker to sheet metalworking subcontractor
Promoting manufacturing in the developed world is important especially for former investment banker Troy Barratt, so much so that he sacrificed his career in Wall Street and then the City of London to buy a subcontract sheet metal fabricating business in Sittingbourne, Kent. While working for a merchant bank in London, he learnt that rising labour costs in China and other low-wage countries, together with higher shipping costs and perceived quali...
Weight transmitters used for agricultural produce handling machinery
The automated BOXFILR system specifically for handling vegetable produce such as potatoes, carrots and onions is manufactured by Netherlands based agricultural machinery specialist Van Hees. During harvest time for farm use, and as an all-year-round support for distribution storage and transportation, the system includes conveyor delivery, filling, emptying and crate stacking operations with very high efficiency thanks to several modules that per...
Energy efficient vehicle designed for Shell Eco-marathon
A team of engineering students at London South Bank University have designed an ultra-fuel-efficient car to be put to the test on the track at the 2017 Shell Eco-marathon.The competition, now in its 33rd year, brings together approximately 200 universities from around Europe, challenging students to create vehicles which use as little fuel or electricity as possible.Six students, supervised by Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering Dr Antonio ...
Selecting DC-link capacitors in power converters
In applications from the simplest cell-phone charger to grid-tied inverters operating at hundreds of kW, power conversion schemes are used which incorporate an intermediate stage where energy is processed at DC. A ‘DC-link’ capacitor is fitted at this point to provide a low impedance path for high frequency switching currents and to provide energy storage.
