Software advances the modelling of astronomical observations
A recent study in Science cast doubt on one formerly favoured explanation for why an abundance of positrons – the antimatter counterparts of electrons – has been found near Earth. Two nearby collapsed stars, it turns out, aren’t likely to blame because their positrons couldn’t have traveled as far as the Earth.
The right Engineers-Pin for your project
In what appears to be a simple product, the specification of engineering pins can be a surprisingly difficult matter, and should not be underestimated.Given that most pins are used to precisely locate and/or retain components in a long-term assembly, Challenge Europe offer their expertise in detailing pin types, fit, tolerance, material finish and cost so that customers can find the optimum pin, and pin fitting system for their project.
MicroCare takes a look at safer cleaning choices
Engineers are always looking for alternatives to chemicals that might have health concerns or cause environmental damage.Worries abound: from long-term health effects, to environmental implications to economic considerations, these all have had a huge impact on the manner in which industry cleans. Regulations and guidelines can be bewildering especially with the laws continually changing and redefining the choices companies can and can’t us...
Electric vehicles are taking over the automotive market
Without a doubt, the market for electric vehicles is growing rapidly. While we are still in the initial phase there are several signs that the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) market is emerging from its infancy. Figures from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) confirm this; whereas in 2010 the worldwide electric vehicle market was more or less zero, by 2015 over half a million electric cars had been sold - and sales are continu...
It's all about the experience, tradition and passion
To ensure five-star quality at the five-brother company Bühler Bedachungen und Bauspenglerei from Romanshorn in Switzerland, three qualities are essential – experience, tradition and passion. The business that specialises in roofing and architectural sheet metal puts quality at the top of the list for priorities, particularly when it comes to selecting its partners and suppliers.
SPS IPC Drives 2017: IT security in automation tour
The SPS IPC Drives 2017 show, which took place last month in Nuremberg, this year offered guided toursfor the first time, which saw specially trained tour guides show visitors directly to the booths of select exhibitors. Electronic Specifier went along to the tours, and during the two hour walkabout we were able to experience the most important innovations and exhibits for certain topics.
National manufacturing photography winners revealed
The winners of this year’s EEF Manufacturing Photography Competition, sponsored by Liberty were announced at a high-profile event at the House of Commons in London on Tuesday 12th December by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, and 63 shortlisted images were put on display. The competition, now in its 8th year, seeks creative images that capture the essence of modern manufacturing.
Hybrid quantum network connects different qubits
Quantum information has been transferred between a cold atomic gas and a solid crystal using photons. The work was done by Nicolas Maring and colleagues at the Institute of Photonic Sciences and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology and could lead to significant advances in quantum computing and even the creation of a 'quantum internet'.An important challenge in building a quantum computer is how to transfer quantum bits (qubits) of i...
Pulsars could hide planets hosting alien life
It is theoretically possible that habitable planets exist around pulsars - spinning neutron stars that emit short, quick pulses of radiation. According to research, such planets must have an enormous atmosphere that converts the deadly x-rays and high energy particles of the pulsar into heat. The results, from astronomers at the University of Cambridge and Leiden University, are reported in the journalAstronomy & Astrophysics.
Icebound detector reveals how ghostly neutrinos are blocked
Famously, neutrinos canzip through a million miles of lead without skipping a beat. Now, in a critical measurement that may one day help predict physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, an international team of researchers with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory has shown how energised neutrinos can be stopped cold as they pass through the Earth.
