Slimmed down aircraft wings reduce fuel & emissions by 50%
Every bit of weight on an aircraft increases the fuel, emissions and money required to put it in the air. NASA and Boeing have been working together to design a longer, thinner and lighter wing – so different from typical commercial transport aircraft wings that it requires a brace, or truss, to provide the wing extra support.
Boeing produces reversible energy storage system
U.S. defence firm Boeing Co. has ventured into the energy storage business for its latest research and development project for the U.S. military. After nearly a year and a half in development, the company shipped the new fuel cell system to the U.S. Navy last week. Based on reversible solid oxide fuel cell technology, Boeing said its system stores energy by using power from renewable sources such as wind or solar to compress and store hydrogen.
The first global standards for aircraft emissions
Last month, the United States and 22 other countries agreed to the first-ever global carbon emissions standards for commercial aircraft. The standards, set by the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), are estimated to reduce carbon emissions by more than 650 million tons between 2020 and 2040—roughly equal to the emissions produced by 140 million cars in a single year.
MQuick - a new brand of modular rectangular connectors for aviation
Souriau will present its MQuick range at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg from April 5-7, 2016. This new range of modular rectangular connectors meets interconnection needs between aircraft networks and on-board cabin systems.MQuick - the new range of rectangular connectors for aircraft cabins The new MQuick range of rectangular connectors features a complete selection of components built around a range of standard modules, mechanical conne...
World's longest non-stop flight has been achieved
Emirates has launched its first non-stop service between Dubai and Auckland, one of the world’s longest scheduled flights, bringing 39 European destinations and another 38 in Africa and the Middle East within just one stop of New Zealand. And to celebrate the milestone, the first service was operated with a double-decker A380 rather than the Boeing 777-200LR that will regularly fly the route.
Are drones posing a serious threat to aviation?
There are growing fears that the usage of UAVs, or drones, is increasing the chances of a security breach within the aviation industry. Although these threats are evolving, Tony Tyler, Head of aviation trade body, Iata, has called for regulations to be put in place now before a serious accident occurs.
Ultrathin semiconductor heterostructures for new technologies
Heterostructures formed by different three-dimensional semiconductors form the foundation for modern electronic and photonic devices. Now, University of Washington scientists have successfully combined two different ultrathin semiconductors - each just one layer of atoms thick and roughly 100,000 times thinner than a human hair - to make a new two-dimensional heterostructure with potential uses in clean energy and optically-active electronics.
Hydrogen fuel cells extend drone flight time
Intelligent Energy has announced it has developed a prototype of a hydrogen fuel cell powered range extender for drones. The range extender offers longer flight time and fast re-fuel capabilities, addressing two of the biggest challenges for manufacturers of battery-powered drones.
Filtering out the dangers
Nowhere is the progress of technology more evident than in the defence sector. In this article Electronic Specifier Design Editor Joe Bush talks to Paul Currie, Sales and Marketing Director of MPE, a manufacturer of EMC filters and capacitors, about the current dangers in the industry and the role his company plays in mitigating these risks.
A practical response to the threat of IEMI
With the increasing use of electronics to control every aspect of modern life, from smart grids to driverless cars, Intentional ElectroMagnetic Interference (IEMI) is a growing threat. Various initiatives have been set-up to address the needs of specific market areas, and new standards are being worked on. William Turner, Senior Design Engineer, MPE, explains.
