Scientists fabricate first highly oxidation-resistant boride
Borides are among the hardest and most heat-resistant substances on the planet, but their Achilles' Heel, like so many materials', is that they oxidise at high temperatures. Oxidation is the chemical reaction commonly known as corrosion or rusting - it can signal the end for a material's structural integrity. But researchers from Drexel University, Linkoping University in Sweden and Imperial College London have produced an aluminum-layered boride...
Medals recognise volunteer commitment to chemical engineering
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has presented medals to three individuals in recognition of their significant contributions to professional activity. Ed Daniels, Keith Johnson and Fiona Macleod were presented with the Institution’s Council Medal, Arnold Greene Medal and Frank Lees Medal respectively, at a ceremony held in Edinburgh. UK.
All-GRP enclosure is ideal for ultra-corrosive environments
An enclosure that eliminates all metal parts, for housing outdoor equipment operating in extremely corrosive operating conditions, is announced by the field instrumentation protection specialist Intertec. The enclosure is made from GRP - glass reinforced polyester - a material offering intrinsically high resistance against the corrosive media and environmental conditions found in many field protection applications.
Maintenance-free steel enclosures designed to provide protection
Hylec-APL announces its DEDS Series of lockable, solid door steel enclosures specially designed to provide high-quality, secure, cost-effective protection for exterior electronic and electrical installations. Launching to coincide with Hylec-APL’s appearance at ELEX Westpoint in Exeter, the DEDS Enclosure Series is IP66 rated against water and dust ingress, meets IK10 specifications against impact and complies with IEC 60529 standards.
Engineers use rust to build a solar-powered battery
A team led by William Chueh, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering, and Nicholas Melosh, an associate professor in the same department, has made a discovery that could make large-scale solar power storage a reality. The breakthrough is based on the fact that ordinary metal oxides, such as rust, can be fashioned into solar cells capable of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.
Macaw receives world's first titanium 3D printed beak
A team of veterinarians and 3D printing experts from the Renato Archer Technology and Information Center (CTI) in Campinas, Brazil, have successfully implanted the world’s first metal 3D printed beak on a bright blue and yellow macaw. The bird, named Gigi, was rescued from captivity and found with severe deformations on her beak that prevented her from feeding herself, yet just days after the surgery, she is already well-adapted and able to...
Small LED flood lights offer performance upgrades at superior value
MaxLite releases its 3rd gen of small LED flood lights as energy-saving replacements for quartz halogen and metal halide fixtures in commercial and residential outdoor lighting applications. Listed by DesignLights Consortium (DLC), the upgraded small LED flood lights create bright, shadow-free security and spot lighting for facades, landscapes, public places, retail and residential complexes, and hospitality applications.
A new way to 3D print
A team of Northwestern Engineers have created a new way to print 3D metallic objects using rust and metal powders. While current methods rely on vast metal powder beds and expensive lasers or electron beams, Northwestern’s new technique uses liquid inks and common furnaces, resulting in a cheaper, faster, and more uniform process.
High precision under high pressure
Harmonic Drive UK will be attending marine science and ocean technology showcase Oceanology International (Oi16) in March 2016. The event runs for three days from 15 March to 17 March at London’s ExCeL convention centre, with Harmonic Drive exhibiting a range of products at stand C10.
Rust removal gel helps tackle trillions in losses
NCH Europe has extended its X-Rust 7 range of rust removal products by launching a gel that can be used where immersion of an item in a liquid bath isn't possible. The gel is pH neutral, effective at room temperature and leaves a temporary protective coating after application.
