What is thought to be the first wind lidar, a ZephIR DM, has been deployed in Morocco, by Moroccan energy company, NAREVA Holding. Demonstrating their leadership in technology solutions to maximise potential project value, the announcement follows the company’s acquisition of the lidar in connection with the 200 MW Akhenfir Wind Farm.

Confirmed at the EWEA 2016 Analysis of Operating Wind Farms Workshop where ZephIR Lidar presented methods of optimising wind farm development and operation.

Nyzar Jorio, Head of Performance and Asset Management at NAREVA commented: “During the first phase of wind farm project development our new ZephIR DM wind lidar provides NAREVA with the opportunity to use system ground based mode for wind resource assessment and power performance measurements.”

Jorio continued: “We can then mount the same ZephIR DM on the nacelle of our turbines during the operational phase to perform yaw misalignment studies, power curve measurements and other important turbine health checking and benchmarking routines.”

“NAREVA selected ZephIR DM because of the Dual Mode functionality of the unit, the ability to scan across the full rotor diameter in turbine mounted mode and the excellent customer service reputation, which we have received already to date! As we move into the next phase of Morocco’s wind energy revolution we look forward to working closely with ZephIR Lidar,” Jorio added.

NAREVA has confirmed it will be using the ZephIR DM to support site development activities by performing bankable energy yield assessments before performing power curve measurements equivalent to IEC 61400-12-1 CDV once the site is operational.

Matthew Smith, Head of Business Development at ZephIR Lidar, was pleased to confirm the new relationship: “It’s great to see NAREVA taking a leading role in Morocco and embracing ZephIR Lidar technology. We believe that the commercial acceptance of our wind lidars combined with our outstanding level of customer support gave Nareva the confidence they needed to invest in this technology.”

Smith finished with: “We will work closely with Nareva to realise the benefits from their investment and are honoured to be working with them at this exciting time for the Moroccan wind industry.”
