At the Engineering Design Show 2024 (EDS 2024) TDK-Lambda’s Sean Evans & Alex Smith were excited to talk to Electronic Specifiers’ Harry Fowle about the company’s new GENESYS AC series of power sources.

A new product and a whole new endeavour for TDK, the GENESYS AC (GAC) and GENESYS AC PRO (GAC-PRO) series of 2kVA and 3kVA rated programmable AC power sources are a big new step for the company as it eyes up the AC market from its traditionally DC-focussed background.

A big part of this new product series, as explained by Evans & Smith, is its strong test and measurement capabilities. Featuring a 1U chassis height, the GAC and GAC-PRO are presently providing some of the highest power density scores of any programmable AC power source on the market.

The GENESYS AC range is designed to be an advanced solution that enhances testing operations in an efficient, reliable, and sustainable manner. Whilst AC is something relatively new to TDK, these new systems are built on the backbone of a strong DC knowledge portfolio. The goal for TDK is to offer a complete range of solutions that offer the same feel regardless of whether it is AC, DC, or both simultaneously. Usability is also at the forefront of TDK’s design philosophy when it comes to this new AC series, allowing customers to integrate these products into testing operations with minimum set-up time or confusion.

Key features of the GENESYS AC series

Both the GAC and the GAC-PRO feature a wide range of features that make it applicable to a wide array of different use cases, industries, and more. As previously mentioned, one of the standout features is its high power density of up to 3kVA in full-featured 1U, which is one of the best on the market currently. Beyond this though, these series feature a 350VAC with 20A @ 2kVA and 30A @ 3kVA single range output, AC output frequencies between 16 – 1200Hz, single phase 2 & 3 kVA, and three phase available starting at 6kVA.

Sine, Square and Triangle waveform standards are also present, with arbitrary waveform generation and harmonics analysis capabilities. The series also comes with a 4:1 high crest factor and 4x rated current, and scalable power systems up to 27kVA.

The system comes with LAN, USB, RS232, RS485, and analogue programming and monitoring interfaces as standard, with IEEE/GPIB available as an option. The remote GUI software provided offered full control, sequence programming, and access to pre-programmed test standards for common IEC, aerospace, and marine tests. These standards significantly reduced test times, ensured consistency, and lowered labour costs compared to manual setups.

However, there are some bonus features exclusive to the GAC-PRO. These include 350VAC & +/- 500VDC single range outputs, AC output frequencies ranging from 16 – 1200Hz with a 16 - 5000Hz option, full rated power whilst in DC operation, analog programming and real-time control, and optional IEC 60601, avionic & mil/shipboard test standards & reporting.

Applications of the GENESYS AC series

The applications of this new series are varied, covering a range of different industries. These include:

  • AC/Grid operated products – AC Fans, motors, inverters, white goods
  • ATE/R&D equipment – UPS, power supplies, power sources
  • Automotive – e-mobility, on-board chargers
  • Avionics – airborne equipment, aircraft electric power
  • Shipboards
  • Aerospace & Defence
  • Noise vibration
  • Hardware in loop
  • Renewable Energy
  • Marine

These application areas are all covered by the GENESYS AC series’ various standards spanning automotive, avionic, military, medical, and more.
