Telonic Explores Switch Mode PSU Noise With Video Demos
An ideal PSU would supply pure DC at its output, with no noise evident. How does this work in the real world? What happens to regulation under load? Noise must be measured correctly to avoid troublesome test results. Showing how to correctly recognise the several sources of noise, Charles an Engineer at Telonic Instruments makes some practical measurements on a typical mains-powered switch mode power supply.
In tTo ensure no mains borne noise interferes with tests, Kikusui’s PCR2000M AC source provides AC-power into the small PSU under test, with clean and stable mains of easily adjustable voltage/frequency. Between the PCR2000M and the test unit sits a Kikusui KPM1000 Digital Power Meter, giving a precise measure of the input current and power (including phase angle). The test unit is loaded with a Kikusui PLZ-150U Electronic Load, enabling various precise load conditions to be simulated. Finally, a RIGOL DS4054 4GSa/s 'scope gives an accurate display of the various signals coming out of the test unit. Watch the educational Demo Video below.

##IMAGE_3_R##The PLZ-U Series of compact and high-performance modular electronic loads is capable of operating in five modes: constant current, constant resistance, constant voltage, constant current + constant voltage, and constant resistance + constant voltage. The load system consists of load modules and a frame. The load modules are inserted into the frame that also serves as a control unit. The PLZ-30F frame can accommodate up to three load modules, while the PLZ-50F frame can accommodate up to five.
The PCR-M Series is a small-size AC power supply / Frequency Converter. Single phase 500VA, 1000VA, 2000VA, AC1 to 270V, 40 to 500Hz, DC+/-1.4 to +/-380V, PWM type.
