Isabellenhütte has developed a measurement appliance including a galvanic isolated power supply as a modular system for detecting current and voltage: this system is designed for use in phase current measurement in medium- and high-voltage applications. The measurement appliance’s modular structure takes the form of separate units which can be combined with each other as necessary.
The IHI system consists of three sections: a shunt-based sensor (IPC/IVT), a DC/DC mains adaptor with 20 kV isolation, and the communication module (IHI) with an optical interface inbetween the sensor and IHI module. Depending on their specific requirements, users can opt to leave out the isolated auxiliary voltage, or they can select either the current sensor or the combined current and voltage sensor.

Based on shunt technology, the measurement appliance can be used with applications that entail energy distribution at high levels which need to be measured with precision. The IHI system is characterised by high dielectric strengths of up to 20,000 volts and a large range of current measurements of 150 to 10,000 amperes. The appliance can communicate with up to three current sensors, and the system’s compact design means the current sensor can be installed on bus bars while the IHI communication unit can be mounted on the top hat rail. Optical leads mean information can be transported securely over long signal distances. The IHI system uses an ethernet interface for communication via TCP/IP, which guarantees that IHI can be integrated quickly in customers’ systems.

Examples of application:

– Medium- and high-voltage applications

– Large convertors

– Energy distribution units at power stations and refineries

Technical details of the IHI system:

Power supply: 24 V

Current measurement range: up to 10 kA

Insulation stability: 20 kV

Current precision: 0.1 %

Temperature range: - 40 to 105 °C
