Tyre pressure monitoring for commercial vehicles
Recent reports suggest that 40% of fatal accidents on the road can be attributed to wrongly-inflated tyres. To help address the issue, tyre pressure monitoring specialist TyrePal has launched its new range of tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) for commercial vehicles and buses. A TPMS monitors tyre pressure and temperature information and alerts drivers when a problem arises.
The system comprises of a set of sensors, which can either screw onto each tyre valve in place of the dust cap, or be fitted to the tyre internally. The sensors communicate data to an in-cab monitor which displays the pressure and temperature of up to 22 tyres. Customised alert levels can be set by the driver for high pressure, low pressure and high temperature. The in-cab monitor is powered by an internal lithium battery, which is recharged from the vehicle's power supply.
When purchasing the TPMS, customers have a choice of three sensors; external, flow-through and internal. These heavy duty sensors continue to monitor tyre pressure every hour while in sleep mode, so warnings are given immediately on starting up the vehicle.
"Latest statistics suggest there are 283 fatal or serious road accidents each year related to wrongly-inflated tyres," explains Peter Tillotson, business development manager of TyrePal. "Despite this, drivers continue to use busy roads without checking the status of their tyres.
"For larger transport, such as heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses, an accident can be even more dangerous. TyrePal's TPMS range specifically targets these larger vehicles, with the aim of making drives aware of the importance of tyre pressure, and making it easier for them to spot a potentially dangerous situation."
