When the new VW Golf VII is presented in September 2012, the entire world will be looking at the global brand’s most important model. With 29 million units sold since 1974, the Golf continues to be Wolfsburg company’s best seller. The new model includes an important feature of the ELMOS infotainment system: Among other things, and ELMOS chip detects when something approaches the middle console screen.
The core of this solution is a chip based on the patented HALIOS principle (High Ambient Light Independent Optical System). Its unique attribute: Whether the sun is shining or you are driving at night, the system isn't affected by ambient light. Just as little as by temperature fluctuations, scratches, and dust.

HALIOS is a sensor system working on an optical and capacitive basis at the same time. Both systems can be used simultaneously and can exchange information among each other. It is therefore possible to combine the known advantages of a capacitive switch with a touchless recognition of gesture provided by optical sensorics. Even low-end SMD infrared LEDs facilitate a range of up to 30 centimeters.
