Image sensor for mobile device front-facing cameras
Designed specifically for front-facing camera applications in smartphones and tablets, the OV9762 is a high-performance CameraChip sensor from Omnivision. Making use of the company’s first 1.87-micron OmniBSI-2 pixel, the image sensor provides enhanced image quality as well as best-in-class 720p high-definition video.
By using the recently launched 1.87-micron OmniBSI-2 pixel, the OV9762 is capable of recording 1.3-megapixel (1376x960 pixels) video at 30 frames per second. With electronic image stabilisation, the CameraChip sensor can record best-in-class 720p HD video at 30 frames per second. Compared to full resolution, the image sensor provides twice the sensitivity at VGA resolution (640x480 pixels). This makes it particularly suited to lower-resolution front-facing cameras and enables the OV9762 sensor to deliver high quality video capture, even in difficult low-light conditions.
Combining custom 65nm design rules and new manufacturing process modules, OmniBSI-2 technology is capable of industry-leading low-light sensitivity and significantly improved dark current and full-well capacity. Improved pixel layout and isolation, as well as significantly reduced crosstalk is achieved through the technology's custom pixel design rules. This results in higher image quality, enhanced colour reproduction and improved overall camera performance in small form factors.
Archie de Guzman, Senior Product Marketing Manager, OmniVision, commented: “By using this new, slightly larger pixel, we developed an image sensor that offers dramatically improved HD video in a package that is pin-to-pin compatible with the previous generation OV9760. As a drop-in replacement to the popular OV9760, the new OV9762 allows smartphone and tablet manufacturers to effortlessly upgrade their existing front-facing camera designs to a top quality 720p HD camera.”
In volume production now, Omnivision's colour CMOS 1.3-megapixel (1376x960 pixels) OV9762 CameraChip sensor fits into a compact 4.3x4.1mm package.
