DC21 Operations has officially partnered with Gill Instruments in a collaboration to transform wind turbine performance using innovatory ultrasonic anemometers.

This alliance will provide Endurance wind turbine owners with a more reliable and cost-effective solution for wind speed measurement, ensuring long-term turbine reliability and productivity.

The collaboration was formed in response to challenges faced by Endurance wind turbine owners, particularly the frequent failures of ageing mechanical anemometers. Such failures resulted in increased maintenance costs and operational downtime. DC21 recognised the need for a long-lasting and low-maintenance alternative, so collaborated with Gill Instruments in the introduction and seamless integration of the WindSonic M ultrasonic anemometer—an advanced sensor designed to withstand extreme weather conditions such as freezing rain.

Unlike mechanical anemometers, WindSonic M ultrasonic sensors have no moving parts susceptible to wear and tear. This allows accurate wind speed and direction measurements to be delivered with minimal maintenance. DC21 chose to introduce the heated version of the device for enhanced turbine reliability through the prevention of ice and snow accumulation.

“Our partnership with Gill Instruments represents an exciting step forward in DC21’s journey to enhance the performance and durability of Endurance wind turbines,” said Matthew Tidmarsh, General Manager at DC21 Group. “The introduction of advanced ultrasonic anemometers provides Endurance turbine owners with access to a solution not only offering long-term cost savings but improved efficiency.”

Gill Instruments echoed the sentiment, highlighting the technological benefits of the collaboration. “We are excited to bring our expertise in sensor technology to the wind energy sector through this partnership with DC21,” said Ben Powell, Business Development Manager, at Gill Instruments. “The WindSonic M demonstrates exceptional performance in challenging conditions, and we are confident that the introduction of our anemometer will significantly benefit Endurance turbine operators.”

The DC21-Gill Instruments partnership ensures that Endurance wind turbine owners and operators can maintain turbine performance while minimising maintenance costs.
