DC/DC controller avoids high impedance input source collapse
The company's first synchronous SEPIC, inverting, boost and flyback multi-topology DC/DC controller, the LT8710 has been introduced by Linear Technology. The power IC is suitable for applications including lead acid battery chargers, automotive ECU power, solar panel power converters, high power local power supplies and wide input voltage range SEPIC/inverting.
Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +125°C, the LT8710 replaces the output diode with a high efficiency P-channel MOSFET. This increases efficiency up to 90% and maximum output current up to 10A, as well as eliminating the heat sink typically required in medium to high power applications. With these characteristics the LT8710 retains highly versatility for a variety of power supply designs.
Producing an output voltage that is dependent on the choice of external components, the LT8710 operates over an input voltage range of 4.5-80V. Rail-to-rail output current monitor and control enables the device to be configured as a current source. With an adjustable undervoltage lockout function, the LT8710 features an innovative EN/FBIN pin circuitry for slowly varying input signals and for input voltage regulation to avoid collapsing a high impedance input source (such as a solar panel).
With a selectable fixed operating frequency of 100-700kH, the LT8710 can be synchronised to an external clock. Configurable for either forced continuous or pulse skipping operating modes during light load condition, the DC/DC controller features current-mode control to provide excellent line and load regulation. Additionally, the power IC features single pin positive or negative output voltage sensing, a flag pin that can be used as a power good indicator or C/10 indication for accurate bulk and battery float voltages, and integrated soft-start circuitry.
Available now in a 20-lead TSSOP, the LT8710 synchronous SEPIC, inverting, boost and flyback multi-topology DC/DC controller is priced from $3.41 (USD) each in 1,000 unit quantities.
