Applications for surface mount chip resistors with high power requirements typically result in increased circuit temperatures due to thermal resistance limitations.

One of the most common and cost-effective methods for mitigating power effects is through the use of wide terminations. By applying terminations to the long sides of the component, the hotspot temperature of a specific chip size can be reduced by 30% to 40%. Enhancing power handling and reducing heat is crucial for current sensing functions, as elevated power levels often cause the sense resistor to operate at high temperatures.

Stackpole’s CSRW series offers wide terminations in sizes 0508, 0612, and 1225, with power ratings from 0.5W up to 3W. This provides designers with greater power capacity within a given footprint while decreasing the thermal resistance of the sensing element.

Pricing for the CSRW varies depending on size and tolerance, ranging from $0.065 to $0.215 for minimum quantities.
