SL Power Electronics adds to its PoE offering

With the ever increasing adoption of IP telephony and the growing abundance of IP devices in general, Power Over Ethernet, or PoE, is seen as a cost effective and in many cases necessary method of powering the deployed equipment. This is particularly true for “always on” devices. Power Over Ethernet integrates data, voice and power on standard Ethernet infrastructure providing many options for power distribution allowing IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, surveillance cameras and other embedded appliances to get power and data over existing CAT5 cabling. An international standard since 2002 (IEEE802.3af), PoE has become established as an economical and safe power distribution method and is already widely used throughout the world.

The key advantages of PoE include safety and reliability, single wire connection and compatibility with existing network infrastructure. The Ault Division of SL Power Electronics has a range of products including power sources and line splitters designed to add Power over Ethernet to a network.

The Ault PW180 family provides power and data over a single Ethernet cable. This compact, self-contained device provides an efficient and cost-effective solution to systems designers confronting the need for additional electrical outlets or the placement of network access points.

The Ault PW180 is said to control costs and save time for OEMs because it eliminates the need for expensive electrical contractors, scheduling and compliance with local code standards. Since PoE carries both power and data over a single Ethernet cable, the application is powered through the same cable it already uses to communicate.

There are two versions in the Ault PW180 family that address different end-user needs and applications. The Ault PW180KA powers proprietary equipment with up to 20W of power. The Ault PW180KB powers equipment up to 15.4W and is compliant with IEEE 802.3af whereby the power source recognizes a signature before enabling full output power.

AC input voltage range is 100 to 250 VAC and AC input frequency from 47Hz to 63Hz. The PW180 complies with EMI/RFI regulations, is CE compliant and meets safety approvals for OEMs to support customers worldwide.

Each model has input configuration options of either IEC320 with ground or shaver plug.
