Save space & extend battery life in mobile devices
Extending battery life with efficiencies of up to 96%, Intersil has expanded the ISL911xx family of buck-boost and boost switching regulators. Optimised to support system power supplies and peripherals, the regulators provide smooth transitions from buck to boost to prevent glitches and noise in single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer battery systems such as smartphones and tablets.
Compatible with ultra-small inductors and capacitors to fit within less than 14mm2 board footprint, the ISL911xx buck-boost regulator family targets space-constrained mobile devices. A 2.5MHz switching frequency also reduces the solution size. Requiring just one inductor and few external components, the advanced wafer-level CSP minimises overall space requirements.
The ISL91106 and ISL91107 buck-boost regulators integrate 3.6A switches which are claimed to deliver up to two times faster transient response than the closest competitor. With no significant disturbance to the output, this enables mobile devices to handle large current bursts from power consumption spikes. The 2A output enables reliable system operation under all load conditions and higher efficiency power supplies utilising less PCB space. The devices automatically transition between bypass and buck-boost operating modes when input is close to output, maximising power efficiency. Additionally, the ISL91106 features a sleep mode or an ultra-low-power mode which enable operation with nearly zero quiescent current.
The ISL91132, ISL91133 and ISL91134 high-efficiency boost regulators are claimed to provide a best-in-class true bypass feature for single cell applications where the input voltage can vary above or below the target output. Low no-load quiescent current significantly reduces standby power consumption. When the input battery voltage is subject to large transients, the 1.8A ISL91132 and 2.3A ISL91133 maintain the required output voltage for critical system functions. The 1.8A ISL91134 offers a soft-start ramp feature and boost to 5V. This makes it suitable for use with Class-D audio amplifiers.
