Nordic Semiconductor’s nPM1300 Power Management IC
Nordic’s multi-function nPM1300 Power Management IC gives developers a simple yet effective way to add a compact, highly optimised power management solution to their low-power products.
The nPM1300 is the first-ever PMIC to fully integrate every system management feature needed, eliminating the need to design integral system management functions – with multiple discrete components – from scratch.
In addition to its power- and space-saving attributes, what is also so innovative about the nPM1300 is that it combines all circuitry in a single chip. The most important of these newly integrated on-board functions is its software-based fuel gauge system, which uses advanced signal processing to accurately estimate the battery charge. This provides battery fuel gauging with the same accuracy as dedicated fuel gauge chips but without the associated cost and power consumption, making the nPM1300 the most cost- and power-efficient fuel gauging solution on the market.
A further benefit is that the nPM1300 eliminates the complexity of PMIC evaluation and development with an associated Evaluation Kit (nPM1300 EK). Using the Evaluation Kit, coupled with Nordic’s nPM PowerUP app, makes it easy for developers to quickly identify and implement ways to minimise power consumption.
The nPM1300 also features USB port detection with automatic current limits of 100 or 500mA through standard USB or up to 1500mA through USB-C; dynamic power path management which automatically switches to battery power if mains power is removed; and ultra-low current ship- and hibernate-mode with a programmable wake-up timer. The PMIC also features three LED drivers and five GPIOs that can be re-purposed to direct control lines to time-critical control functions as an alternative to serial commands. Application examples for the nPM1300 include advanced wearables and portable medical applications.
