Military turns to SL Power Electronics for high reliability power products
SL Power Electronics is being increasingly requested by Government contractors and manufacturers of military equipment to supply them with high grade, high specification and complex equipment for their power systems. SL Power Electronics has seen a dramatic increase in interest from companies looking for power systems designed to meet their demanding needs and see the company’s expertise in rugged high reliability medical equipment to be an obvious solution.
SL Power Electronics is part of SL Industries a multinational manufacturer of power electronics, power motion and power protection equipment that is used across a wide variety of aerospace, computer, datacom, industrial, medical, telecom, transportation and utility equipment applications.
SLPower Electronics is the largest division and provides one of the industry’s widest range of internal and external power supplies designed for many markets such as industrial equipment and test instrumentation and is the industry leader in the medical power supply segment.
According to Nigel Davies, European Managing Director for SL Power, examples of the type of product currently being supplied are varied, but complex. On the one hand, the company is supplying a power system for a ship-borne communications system. The system uses multiple 5,000W distributed power systems, which include over 100, 300W DC/DC converters. In contrast to this, a major USA based military equipment manufacturer is using three different systems in a mobile land based vehicle. The high power system is supplied with either AC input, DC input or dual AC/DC input.
For many years, SL Power Electronics has also used its high performance external products in communication projects and is a supplier to multiple platforms for secure communications. Recently the company has won contracts to develop high density platforms for secure broadband and radio data transmission in support of military and Homeland Security applications.
SL Power expects increasing demand for this service as countries look to re-equip with ever more complex military hardware, but Governments have increasingly tighter constraints put on them with available finance, as a result of the world recession. “We supply effective engineering and manufacturing resources for Contractors and Developers of military and security oriented applications. Our years of experience are helping key providers to deliver solutions in this volatile time of world events and financial duress” said Nigel Davies.
The company will continue to lead the industry in response to increasing requirements for high specification military/commercial grade power systems. With its expertise in power supplies and with considerable experience in battery charging and complex power system design, SL Power will provide custom and COTS solutions to meet the increasing demand of this challenging marketplace.
