Maxim introduced the MAX16903/MAX16904, automotive-grade, synchronous step-down converters that consume only 25microamps (no load) and deliver 1A and 600mA, respectively. These 2.1MHz step-down converters are optimized for operation over the 3.5V to 28V range. Designed to withstand the extreme battery-voltage conditions in automotive applications, the MAX16903/MAX16904 tolerate load-dump transients up to 42V and cold-crank excursions down to 3.5V. The devices are capable of running at high duty cycle to maintain a steady output voltage during cold-crank and start/stop conditions. This wide-ranging tolerance combined with the devices' ultra-low quiescent current makes the MAX16903/MAX16904 ideal for automotive applications.
The MAX16903/MAX16904 integrate high- and low-side FETs to eliminate the need for an external Schottky diode, thus saving both space and cost while improving power efficiency. Additionally, this architecture enables the devices to operate in skip mode for lower current consumption or in forced PWM mode for improved EMI performance. They have an open-drain, power-good output to ease power-supply sequencing. Protection features include overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown.

The MAX16903/MAX16904 are fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +125 degrees Celsius automotive temperature range. They are AEC-Q100 qualified and available in thermally enhanced, 16-pin TSSOP and 10-pin TDFN packages.
