High-integration power IC eliminates more than 20 components
Power Integrations introduce a new family of power ICs, which combine two-switch-forward and flyback power-supply controller ICs with integrated high-voltage MOSFETs. Enabling a smaller form factor and higher power density, the high level of integration on the HiperTFS-2 family reduces the component count by more than 20.
Featuring a selectable switching frequency between 66 kHz and 132 kHz, the main converter reduces system cost by enabling the use of very small magnetics. With efficiencies of more than 90% at full load, the HiperTFS-2 ICs provide 175% peak power (meeting the requirements of next-generation Intel CPUs). Target applications for the new power ICs include PCs (80 PLUS Bronze and 80 PLUS Silver), printers, LCD TVs, video game consoles, high power adaptors, and industrial & appliance.
Capable of delivering up to 364 W total output power (586 W peak) in a compact two-row eSIP power package, the new IC family is a single chip implementation of a two-switch-forward main (66/132 kHz) and flyback (132 kHz) standby power supply. While a transformer-reset control function prevents saturation under all conditions, the HiperTFS-2 family offers safety features including undervoltage, overvoltage, over-temperature, overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
Chris Lee, product marketing manager at Power Integrations, commented: “HiperTFS-2 ICs enable power supply miniaturization in applications including 80 PLUS Bronze and Silver PCs, gaming-console adapters and industrial products. The inclusion of the high-side MOSFET driver allows designers to eliminate the pulse transformer and many other supporting components, simplifying design and reducing the size (and cost) of the magnetics.”
Power Integrations have also released a new reference design based on the HiperTFS-2 IC. DER368, describes a 12 V, 180 W power supply with 250 W peak power load and 10 W standby power (downoad it below).
Priced at $1.74 (USD) each in 10K quantities, the HiperTFS-2 ICs are sampling now with production quantities to follow.
