Data Device Corporation (DDC) has announced the introduction of its RD-19231 Series of 16-bit Resolver-to-Digital (R/D) Converters, which offer 3.3V or 5V compatibility and are designed for high performance aerospace, industrial, and commercial positioning systems. The RD-19231, contained in a small 64-pin plastic quad flat pack (10x10mm), is a drop in replacement to all RD-19230 legacy designs, and replacement requires no modification of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

This single SOI CMOS monolithic chip merges precision analogue circuitry with digital logic to form a complete high performance tracking R/D converter with accuracy up to 1 arc minute. For convenience and flexibility, the RD-19231 offers user programmable encoder emulation, resolution, bandwidth, tracking rate, velocity scaling and a new selectable I/O voltage output of 5V or 3.3V. Furthermore, an internal encoder emulation feature (with independent resolution control) enables the RD-19231 to emulate incremental optical encoder output signals, so that new encoder based systems can now easily interface with a resolver output.

Normally, as little as six degrees of resolver phase shift can cause accuracy problems in a 16-bit R/D converter. The RD-19231’s synthesised reference capability not only eliminates errors caused by quadrature (phase shift) voltage, but also ensures accurate operation with a phase shift of up to 45°. Additionally, the RD-19231’s differential resolver inputs allow for easy filtering in noisy environments.

The RD-19231 accepts two sets of bandwidth components providing users with uncompromising precision for a wide variety of dynamic applications. The dual bandwidth feature also enables users to switch the resolution on the fly between 10, 12, 14, or 16-bit settings with minimal upset to velocity and position information. Dual bandwidth and switch on the fly resolution are valuable features for applications requiring high resolution with a settling time that is faster than such a resolution will permit.

The RD-19231’s ±4V velocity output (VEL) eliminates the need for a tachometer, and the VEL’s full scale value can be easily set with a single resistor. Velocity scaling, reversal error, and offset parameters may be externally trimmed for applications requiring tighter specifications than are the norm.

The RD-19231 series operates in temperatures ranging from -40° C to +85° C, and is ideal for aerospace, industrial, and commercial position applications, including servo motor controls, antenna positioning, aircraft position feedback systems, machine tool and robotic positioning controls, and manufacturing process control systems. The RD-19231 is available in both lead and RoHS lead free versions.

Benefits:

  • 3.3V or 5V I/O voltage output
  • Drop-in replacement to the legacy RD-19230 Series
  • Analogue component eliminates need for DO-178 re-certification
  • Small footprint
  • Single chip converter
  • Programmable bandwidth and velocity output
  • Scalable to your application needs
  • Encoder emulation to replace an encoder with a rugged resolver

“The RD-19231’s new selectable 5V or 3.3V I/O voltage output capability, along with its versatile programmability and performance, enable it to support a wide array of aerospace, industrial, and commercial positioning applications”, stated DDC Business Unit Manager, Mike Agic.
