Fairchild Semiconductor - Switch Manages 30W of Output Power without a Heatsink
Fairchild Semiconductor can now provide designers of LCD monitors and TVs, set-top boxes and DVD players with a highly integrated FPS power switch in an 8-DIP package that can handle up to 30W of output power without a heat sink. Eliminating a heat sink allows LCD monitors to be slimmer and reduces the overall cost of the design.

To ensure low standby consumption in power-sensitive applications, the FSFM300 uses burst mode protection bringing standby power consumption to less than 70~140mW depending on the selection of passive components at no load and 265 VAC. Since many of these applications need to operate during a wide variety of conditions, this power switch incorporates strong protection features such as over voltage protection, over load protection, advanced over current protection and internal thermal shutdown to shut down the power supply safely in the event of a failure or abnormal condition.
The FSFM300 adds to Fairchild’s comprehensive portfolio of power switches (FPS™). These highly integrated off-line power switches feature a fully avalanche-rated SenseFET and current mode PWM IC with advanced burst mode operation to meet low standby power regulations. These switches are instrumental in simplifying designs and lowering costs in power-sensitive applications.
