Delta, a global leader in power and energy management solutions, has introduced its latest innovation in energy storage: a containerized LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery system designed for megawatt-scale applications such as solar energy shifting and ancillary services. This next-generation system aims to tackle industry challenges like rising construction costs, space constraints, and safety concerns while optimizing on-site operations and comprehensive risk management for long-term success.

A Flexible, Efficient, and Safe Energy Storage Solution

Housed in a compact 10-foot container, Delta's new battery system offers a flexible and efficient energy storage solution. The enclosed cable design and positioning tolerance streamline installation, significantly reducing setup time. Enhanced safety features include the use of LFP cells, redundant sensors, individual cell monitoring, fire-resistant materials, and an integrated sprinkler system. These safety components collectively reduce the risk of thermal runaway, ensuring rapid response to fire hazards and robust system protection.

Addressing Industry Challenges with Safety and Efficiency

"As the scale and complexity of energy storage projects grow, the need for efficient installation and comprehensive system solutions will continue to increase," said Jim Chen, Vice General Manager of Delta's Energy System Solutions Business. "Our goal is to provide a balanced approach that considers cost, safety, and operational challenges from planning through execution. This not only enhances ROI for our customers but also aligns with broader sustainability and social goals. The new system reflects Delta's deep experience in energy storage and our commitment to advancing the industry."

Key Features of Delta's Containerised Energy Storage System

Delta's innovative battery system sets a new benchmark for safety, flexibility, and efficiency in industrial applications. Available in configurations from 708 kWh to 7.78 MWh, the system integrates seamlessly with site controllers, UPS, and other components, optimising space utilisation by eliminating the need for additional cabinets. The entire container can be transported without disassembling the battery modules, enabling efficient on-site operations. Flexible dust connectors facilitate easy positioning between containers, and lateral cable entries streamline installation by eliminating trench digging.

The system's design allows for on-site setup without opening the battery compartment, protecting it from moisture and dust. At its core, the system uses LFP cells, known for their safety and long lifespan, with comprehensive monitoring to ensure durability. Active protection mechanisms minimise the risk of thermal runaway, while integrated environmental monitoring features, fire-resistant materials, and optional sprinkler systems help contain potential fire damage.

Advanced Technology for Optimised Performance and Safety

Delta's integrated proactive cell-balancing technology enhances battery stability by dynamically balancing cells during charge and discharge cycles, maximizing system capacity. The advanced Battery Management System (BMS) ensures fast communication and real-time data exchange, maintaining operational reliability. Redundant sensing and communication capabilities ensure continuous control and safe high-performance operation, offering customers a dependable and durable energy infrastructure.

The battery system series has successfully obtained multiple certifications, including UL 9540A, UL 1973, IEC 62619 (including thermal runaway), UN 38.3, and IEC 60730, affirming its compliance with the highest safety standards.
