Suitable for automotive, heavy equipment, industrial and robotic applications, the LTC3807 has been announced by Linear Technology. Featuring a 4-38V input supply range, the synchronous step-down DC/DC controller is designed to protect against high voltage transients and continue operation during automotive cold crank.

The output voltage can be set in the range of 0.8-24V at output currents up to 25A. The LTC3807 consumes just 50µA in standby mode with the output voltage in regulation with efficiencies as high as 95%. The controller incorporates powerful 1.1Ω on-chip MOSFET gate drivers, which are powered by an internal LDO, and current foldback in order to limit MOSFET heat dissipation during overload conditions.

The DC/DC controller has a selectable fixed frequency of 50-900kHz and is synchronisable to an external clock ranging of 75-850kHz. It supports continuous operation, pulse skipping and low ripple Burst Mode operation during light loads. Easy loop compensation, fast transient response and excellent line regulation.

By using an optional sense resistor, or by measuring the voltage drop across the output inductor for the highest efficiency, output current can be sensed. The LTC3807 also features a low 95ns minimum on-time for high step-down ratios, a power good signal and up to 99% duty cycle for low voltage dropout.

Supplied in 20-pin 3x4mm QFN and 20-lead TSSOP thermally enhanced packages, the LTC3807 is priced from $2.30 each in 1,000 unit quantities. It is available in extended and industrial temperature grades (-40 to +125°C), a high temp automotive range (-40 to +150°C) and a military grade (-55 to +150°C).
